So either Anthony and Adam are recreating these roles because they enjoy the characters and love the message, doing it to take a job and get paid, or believe their doing Rent-fans a favor by returning to these roles.
I think people are reading way too much into this. It's a 6 week job, and I never once thought about whether they did it for "the characters or messge" or any other reason. They were good in the roles, I think they'll be good in the roles again, and it's just a show -- not a life changing move. It's a summer gig - and I guess I just don't understand the over-analyzation of it all.
I agree with Yankeefan...if this is happening I'm betting they're getting ready to close the show in the near future.
In regards to Adam's voice, clips I've heard of him singing seem to indicate that he's singing much better (or at least healthier) than when he was originally in Rent. It seems like a lot of the "shouting" is toned down. I don't think he'd have any problem handling the role.
A lot of people complain that he doesn't sound the same now as he did when he did Rent on stage the first time, and that's true. But what he's doing now is way healthier; he's learned how to take better care of his voice.
I'm so excited to hear him sing a theater score live again. I've always liked the way he sounds better on a musical than his solo stuff.
I can't wait to hear him sing in the same show with Carol. They are casting her so that Adam and Anthony don't appear to be so old. I can't wait to hear Carol sing "Over The Moon". She will put Idina to shame.

Their return to Rent is probably due to a combination of enjoying the music and material of Rent, a desire to please fans, and, yes, monetary gain. Maybe mixed in different quantities for Adam and Anthony, but I imagine all of that is present. I can understand people feeling it looks "pathetic" and "desperate," as those were words that came into my head when I first heard the rumors weeks ago as well, but as Becky said, it's ultimately a six-week engagement, not a stint in a year-long tour. Has anyone considered that perhaps the money they earn from this will allow them to continue to expand their careers? If you saw it back with the OBC and are saddened they're doing this, fine, but why not allow others who didn't get the same opportunity to enjoy it? The more I think about their return, the less I'm concerned about extraneous factors and the more I'm excited about getting to see all that talent on the stage.
I think I'm going to be wary about this as long as the Mimi isn't cast. I'd actually prefer a returning cast member, but there are so many that I wouldn't want to ever see again, let alone see with Adam and Anthony.

I think the show is ready to close. They should have brought in the original cast for the 10th anniversary and then closed it. I loved the show, but I don't like the state its in. It's become a joke.
I just hope this will at least give the theatre the incentive to paint over all that crap on the front of the Nederlander. They don't need to walk into work every day and see "SHUT UP BITCHES ADAM'S MINE!" written across the door frame.

"It actually would be kind of cool if the last performance was on December 24th. 9PM..."
I know nothing lasts forever and though I'm not an 'original' Renthead (been a fan for about six years now), the idea of the show closing definitely makes me sad since I have a lot of emotional investment in it personally. BUT if they were to close it on December 24th, that would certainly be one hell of a way to go out! LOL
