"An acclaimed Chicago production of Thornton Wiler's Our Town is expected to resurface Off-Broadway in spring 2009, with Adding Machine director David Cromer re-creating his concept.

Auditions are currently under way. The production, produced by Scott Morfee (who backed New York City productions of the Cromer-directed Orson's Shadow and Adding Machine), will begin in February at the Barrow Street Theatre in Greenwich Village.
An official announcement of the project is expected soon.
The cast is expected to be a mix of Chicago and New York actors. Cromer directed and played the Stage Manager in the Windy City run, produced by The Hypocrites April 24-June 8, 2008, at the Chopin Theatre (and later re-mounted for a September-October run).

The Chicago Tribune reported that the NYC run is not technically a Hypocrites production, and that the Barrow Street would be stripped bare to echo Cromer's earlier concept."

Posted: 12/15/08 at 7:53pmBasically, it takes place in a very small, stripped down theater, it's in modern dress, and the director plays the Stage Manager. The audience can't help but live in Grovers Corners.

Posted: 12/15/08 at 10:51pmI liked the idea of modern dress. I hated in the revival - the one with Paul Newman, I believe - when the audience asked questions that they were in old timey dress. How big is the Barrow Street theater? It's a pretty large show for a straight play.

From what I could make out at a talk I went to with Cromer and Austin Pendleton, the actors wear what they wear to the theatre on to the stage, there are No theatrical lighting instruments involved, only light bulbs.
It's an interesting concept, updating Wilder's idea of stripping down to concentrate on the stories.

Count me in. I don't know David Cromer. But I saw "Adding Machine" three times, and I think it was one of the best stagings NYC has ever seen.
I can't wait to see his new work.

Posted: 2/2/09 at 5:52pmThey just announced the full cast, and previews been in a week or so! I'm so excited! Has anyone been to the Barrow Street theater before and know about their student options? The cheapest seat is $40, which isn't awful, but just curious to know my options before I purchase. And I love their logo for "Our Town." It's hip, but yet old school.

This is amazing news! Saw the show in Chicago and it was brilliant! Cromer is a great director and has an amasing vision. He was one of my directing professors at Columbia College and I was in his production of West Side Story; ive learned so much from him! I have to get to New York to see this!!
