I agree that European, Japanese, etc. tastes often differ greatly from that of Americans, so it's not all that surprising that something could be a hit elsewhere and not here (and vice versa). Hell, it's even true of British and American taste.
I don't get the notion that there is some motiveless vendetta against Wildhorn on the part of NY critics. What's the point?
I know it's frustrating when work you admire isn't admired by others. And I think everyone's opinion is as valid as any one else's, critics included. If you enjoy his music, you should keep enjoying it.
