After Midnight or Gentlemen's Guide?
#1After Midnight or Gentlemen's Guide?
Posted: 10/27/13 at 12:24pmI'll be back in the city in 2 weeks and am wondering if anyone has seen both shows which one do you think I should see? I'll probably see both eventually but I believe both are in previews and I fiqure before they open it'd be easier to get tickets. Which one is more of a must see. After Midnight I'm not as familiar with. It seems more like a concert than a show which is fine for me. The music seems good for what I've heard but other than that I don't know much. For Gentlemen's Guide, it looks hysterical but so far people seem iffy about it. I thought it'd be like One Man Two Governers but that's not what people seem to be saying. Although I do like a good comedy even if it's not One Man Two Governors. Any tips on which to see? And for those who would maybe suggest Big Fish instead I've already seen it and thought it was great! Any help would be appreciated!

Like all of these questions, which come up frequently, your choice depends on your personal taste. If you like Duke Ellington's music and the singing and choreography of that period, I would say After Midnight, hands down. Gentleman's Guide is professionally done and features great singing (no dancing). Some people are calling it an old-fashioned musical, and I would agree with that up to a point. It's definitely a black comedy with edge. I would recommend reading the individual threads dedicated to each show to help you make up your mind.

Posted: 10/27/13 at 11:14pmI haven't seen Gentlemen's Guide yet, but i did see After Midnight. If you chose the latter, try not to pay more than $50 for it. It's actually up on TDF often for only $45.00, for what it is worth.

Gentleman's Guide has also been on TDF fairly consistently, so if you're eligible to join, it might be worth your while, as long as you're not fussy about where you sit. The site is tdf.org, and click on TDF membership.

Posted: 10/28/13 at 12:53pmI can't speak to both (I see Gentlemen's Guide tomorrow night), but will say that I enjoyed After Midnight immensely. I was actually over the moon about it and had a lot of fun. And would go back and see it again several times. I also got what was probably my best TDF seat in the six years I have held a membership with them. Can't beat Orch C center!

Posted: 10/29/13 at 4:34amI saw both this week. I don't know your taste. But if you value musicianship and the art of dance and if you gravitate to the classic songwriters from Broadway and beyond -- especially the incomparable Harold Arlen, then you should go for After Midnight. I personally found Gentleman's Guide insufferably dull when on paper it looked like it was going to be a wild, witty, tuneful evening. After Midnight left me (and my three friends who accompanied me tonight) walking on air. I wish I had time in my schedule to go back and see it. And if it's still playing the next time I visit NY, I will be returning. Heck, if there had been a second show tonight I would have bought tickets for it then and there.

Posted: 10/29/13 at 8:50amI haven't seen after midnight yet but I saw A gentleman's guide in California when they were just starting out and I loved it. One of the most original shows I've seen in a while. It was hilarious and the music was great. I highly recommend it.
