So does anyone have any idea how this is achieved?

It can't be a machine underneath as people go under it. I can only assume it's wires with a complex set up to keep it very stable.

It looks soooo smooth.

I would love to see that. Do you think it will transfer to the West End?

Disney created a new technology to use wires to suspend the carpet, without the wires being visible to the naked eye. The wires on the corners are spun very quickly so that your eye cant see them. If you can imagine a jump rope, its the same idea.

In a *cough* video *cough* I watched of the sequence, it appeared that each corner has several very very thin wires helping support it... instead of one thick one...

It's certainly wires. I could see them from where I was sitting (toward the mid-orch).

From mezz it looks like there were no wire at all. Very magical.
