Different cities in different countries with different sense of taste. They also didn't get raves like lion king on Broadway.

Don't Disney works in general (other than maybe the actual animated movies) do worse overseas compared to in the US? In general a lot of Disney's tone and stories tend to work best with average Americans compared to the rest of the world I feel. Just different cultural tastes and all. Same reason why even the Disney theme parks in Europe didn't go over nearly as well (though that had a few other problems as well).

Broadway also has James Monroe Iglehart who manages to distract from at least a few of the flaws.
