Alan Cumming - Spiderman

Alan Cumming has apparently pulled out of playing captain Hook for the National theatre of Scotland to play something in Julie Taymors' Spiderman on Broadway.

Love him....and that makes Spiderman a TAD more appealing....but not enough to go....yet.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Could be great ! I wonder what he will be playing .... The villian is female....

re: Alan Cumming - Spiderman

Interesting, if the villain is female. I would have guessed he would have played the Green Goblin, but I guess not.

There was an open call for the Female Villan part calling for a Russian accent ... hmmmm

re: Alan Cumming - Spiderman

There are a lot of villains in the piece, apparently. He will be playing Green Goblin.

re: Alan Cumming - Spiderman

Hmm...the female in question could be Calypso Ezili who is connected to Kraven the Hunter.
Green Goblin, Carnage, Electro, Rhino, Swarm (pictured) and Lizard - plus a new baddie called Swiss Miss who, like a Swiss army penknife, has an array of blades and corkscrews.

I agree! This show could be really sweet I think.. Especially if Alan Cumming really does play the Green Goblin!

re: Alan Cumming - Spiderman

Michael Reidel reported in The Post weeks ago that they were in talks with Cumming to play the Green Goblin (Taymor just worked with him on her film version of The Tempest):

"JULIE Taymor has cast forth her $40 million "Spider- Man" net and hauled in -- Alan Cum ming.

The actor, who won a Tony in 1999 for his memorable turn as the emcee in "Cabaret," is in negotiations to play the Green Goblin in Taymor's new musical, or "circus rock 'n' roll drama," as she calls it.

Whatever it is, it's thought to be the most expensive thing in Broadway history. Cumming was spotted last week at a production meeting, checking out Eiko Ishioka's imaginative costume designs. A sticking point in his negotiation is, of course, money.

Although Sony, the producer, is merrily spending millions to create the show, the company's looking to save on weekly running costs by holding the line on performers' salaries, sources say.

With Taymor at the helm, the overhead could easily hit $900,000 to $1 million. Taymor, says a person who knows her well, is "unfamiliar with the word 'budget.' Cumming's probably worth about $15,000 a week on Broadway, veteran producers say. But there's no reason why he shouldn't ask for more..."

Didn't I say that (sans the Riedel link)?

*sighs* I love Alan Cumming, but I fear this is going to be a hot mess.

Yankeefan, your post inferred (whether you intended it to or not) that you had some sort of inside information.

I was just listing a verifiable source as reporting the same thing, considering a post by you doesn't necessarily qualify as the final word on any given issue.

Is there still no word on whose playing the title role?

Given the precedent of The Threepenny Opera, the former certainly doesn't preclude the latter. :/

The article that I posted states that Reeve Carney is the "main contender" for the role.

re: Alan Cumming - Spiderman

I remember reading at some point that the female villain was a completely new character.

Alan Cumming's involvement just made me SO much more excited for this show. Single tickets are supposed to go on sale this month, and I will gladly be paying full price.
