Posted: 4/9/08 at 3:52pmI adore Alexander Gemignani. I think he's quite talented and I am impressed by his significant accomplishments at such a young age. His Valjean was amazing. I also love him in Sunday. I hope he gets to originate a role written just for him someday.

I honestly didn't really like him all that much in Sunday.
Loved him in Sweeney though.

In Sunday all his scenes felt like A college performance. His limp was inconsistent, and all of his acting seemed forced. I had the same feeling watching Les Mis. There was so much indicating going on, it felt like I was back at School watching the Senior Recital. He was fine in Assassins, he was understated and appropriately cast.
I also thought it was interesting that they changed the tracks in Sunday. In the original Brent Spiner played the Franz and Dennis. In this revival Alex played the Boatman and Dennis. I wonder why they changed it.

Gemignani replaced Jordan Gelber after Gelber left after a few performances to do an HBO movie.
He didn't originate it.

I totally agree that his acting seems forced. He has a great voice, and stage presence, but I just found his acting in Sunday and especially Les Mis to be too contrived and predictable. I do agree though that he was fine to good in Assassins and Sweeney.
I also can't stand all the actor cliche phrases he uses in interviews and such like.

Posted: 4/10/08 at 3:08pmFor someone who has seen Les Miz many times, many different casts, Gemignani was my least favorite of all Valjeans. He is indeed very young and I believe the show requires a lot of maturity (though it is called acting, I suppose). Still, for me he did not bring the required depth to the character, did not seem to become the character as so many others have. His singing was fine and I enjoyed him in SITP. A much more appropriate role for him.

I've said before that Alex's Bring Him Home and Who Am I alone are worth the price of admission. Well, he'll be at Feinstein's at Loews Regency (540 Park Ave. at E61 St.), for two nights only: Monday May 5th and Sunday May 18th.
I intend to be there.
p.s. Front and Center, as usual.

Because I think Alex is worth checking out:

Listen to him, and form your own opinion.
p.s. And I don't want to be dining alone.

Wow. I did not know he was only in his 20s. The beard makes him look way older. I guess if you look at his skin close up he appears to be very youthful.

Nepotism?
I would only object to that if Alexander Gemignani were a mediocrity. And he most definetley is not.
He's an enormously talented guy with lots of charisma that deserves every bit of his sucess.
And I would have loved to have seen HIM play the Georges in SUNDAY.
If he were appearing at Birdland or the Metropolitan Room, I'd jump to see him. But Feinstein's is WAY too expensive for me.

Having just seen Sunday again, I have discovered yet another habit of Alex's that annoys me: excessive spitting in the name of seming more "professional".
