Nellie, no...Ado Annie, yes...Adelaide, yes...Ruth, yes.
I think she would be a fantastic Ruth. And it would show that she doesn't have to belt her lungs out to be powerful. Which is true of her, and is something most people forget.

Ugh. Sooo many Patti threads.
As a Patti fan, I am getting sick of Patti right now.

I could imagine this Patti playing Nellie:

Is it bad that I can imagine them without actually ever hearing them? I can just hear her trademark scoopy thing on, "When the..."
But, thanks for letting me know. I'll have to find those now and see if my imagined interpretations are similar to her real ones.
If they are, I'll need to step away from the LuPone for a few months.

Haha. her OPTIMIST is actually very scoopy.
Both can be found on her recording "Matters Of The Heart."

Posted: 6/16/08 at 9:51pmI love "Matters of the Heart," and her "Cock Eyed Optimist" and "A Wonderful Guy" are both quite good.

Nellie-No, i think Patti is too deep/isn't bubbly enough for her
Ruth-definitely...why haven't they done a revival starring Patti as Ruth?
Ado Annie-i could see it
Adelaide-maybe

LuPone has also often said that she wanted to play Cinderella in Into the Woods even though the producers saw her more as the Witch.
I don't see why LuPone couldn't play Ruth Sherwood. If Gypsy closes this year or early next, maybe Laurents could direct LuPone in the revival of Wonderful Town. In 2009 it will be 5 years since that classic was last on Broadway and then LuPone could get that Tony that eluded the often absent Murphy.

Posted: 6/17/08 at 1:35amRuth is in her 30's. Patti is 30 years too old. A concert production at Ravinia would be perfect.

Ljay is completely right.
And Donna Murphy gave one of the most-raved about performances in the past few years as Ruth Sherwood both at City Center and on Broadway. Her performance ALONE was the reason the show itself transfered to Broadway, and her own health issues kept her from fully committing to the run of the show. So why oh why must you take a jab at the "often-absent" Donna Murphy in a thread to sort of honor and discuss Patti LuPone? It makes no sense to me when some people have the need to diminish an artist's work in order to validate another's.
LuPone would have been perfect as Ruth Sherwood in a post-EVITA revival, as it stands now, she is way way too old for the role. Who is going to play Eileen? Barbara Cook? I'd love to hear her take on "One Hundred Easy Ways" though.
I feel she would have never been right for Nellie (same reason why Merman could have never played Nellie either, I think.)
I think she is also too old for Adelaide, but again, would be wonderful in a concert version or a studio recording.
