It was supposed to be an animated movie and concept art of the characters exist online.

I've heard about that, but I think that was for an animated version developed before the musical came to be. What I'm talking about is the live action film version of the Broadway musical that was supposed to be in development after the musical closed.

There was a Natalie Portman lead Cabaret remake rumored for a bit (I’m sure other actresses names were thrown around too).
