Am I the Only One

Something about Betty Buckley and Alice Ripley's voices are similar. They aren't quite pleasant, not quite unpleasant. They have this piercing quality, It's like cold electricity

re: Am I the Only One

Well I don't know if you're the only one, but I LOVE Alice Ripley's voice. I don't know why you would say her voice is not quite pleasant.

(One more thing, why are you like making fun of Alice Ripley's unique voice and have her as your profile picture?)

re: Am I the Only One

I am NOT making fun of Alice or Betty's voice, But her intonations and vowels are not quite pleasant, BUT there is something striking and beautiful about them at the same time

re: Am I the Only One

She's not making fun of her voice. It's not a pleasant voice per se, but as an actress you may not want a "pleasant" voice. Especially not for this role...

re: Am I the Only One

I know what you mean about the 'piercing quality,' especially when she's belting, but I actually think Alice's voice is one of the prettiest I've heard when she's singing in head voice. I guess it's that Ripley and Buckley both have a higher-pitched sounding tone to their voices, which you don't normally hear in belters.

And the thing about sounding not quite pleasant, not quite unpleasant is exactly how I feel about when I listen to Patti LuPone, though, especially in Evita, but it's the opposite of 'piercing.'

re: Am I the Only One

Maybe I'm not understanding of what you mean by unpleasant, because of something being unpleasant is not a compliment.

re: Am I the Only One

She is like Patti LuPone the voice is not angelic, but it is a good voice. I noticed that you said nothing about Betty Buckley being called "unpleasant yet pleasant at the same time" so go read your N2N playbill and fantasize about Aaron Tveit

re: Am I the Only One

Ripley's voice was once VERY pleasant and sweet to listen to (or IMO anyway) - back when she was in SUNSET BLVD.

Also Next to Normal has beaten the **** out of Alice vocal chords

re: Am I the Only One

Um, I have never heard Betty Buckley sing live. I have only heard recordings on youtube and I don't think her voice sounds much Alice's.

Anyway, I'm straight and don't fantasize about guys, but good try.

re: Am I the Only One

I noticed the similarity when Broadway.com had that video of them recording NEXT TO NORMAL. Something about Alice Ripley in that video really does remind me of Betty Buckley.

Some people paint, some people sew, I meddle.
