It is like saying if I get a comp (never going to happen) after preview, because I got in free I do not have the right to critique. However if one is going to be negative they should be proportional to the performance realising the show is in dress rehearsal and not the finished product and keep their views constructive instead of criticism.

No...that is not true. You may have a comp, but it's for a performance...not a rehearsal. The product is, at that point, for sale and deserves whatever the public wants to throw at it. But the invited dress is a rehearsal.

I think I'm coming off too much like I think this is the most horrible thing in the world. I don't. I find it, at most, an annoyance. By all means, gossip about it over a drink and Angus or Centro (or whever you gather in London. Give your critiques to people associated to the show. I just think posting anonymously on a message board about a rehearsal you should feel lucky to have been invited to is just bad form.

Now put a book on your head and learn how to stand up straight!!

(Do I really need to put an emoticon?)

Robbie...
I totally hear what you are saying, and to some extent I agree...but think of this scenario:

I'm invited and go to an invited dress. I choose not to say anything out of respect for whomever "invited" me. 24 hours later the previews begin and so the comments begin flying. I'm going to chime in with my opinions based on what I saw...just a day before. Truly, what's the difference? 24 hours only.

The way we communicated has changed. Producers and performers can no longer expect for what is seen to remain under wraps anymore. And I believe they'd rather have folks talking about what has been seen then for there to be no interest. There is no bad publicity.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Well...you could simply wait the 24 hours as a sign of respect to the people who invited you. Or you could say whatever you want whenever you want.

I'm just offering one actor's opinion (though I know others feel the same). Clearly, other's differ.

Personally, I've gotten to the point where my circle has widened enough where I don't want to piss anybody off...so, as a political move, I try now to only post about shows that I'm enthusiastic about. I've put enough negativity out in the world. Especially about other actors, mostly out of jealousy. And I hate that I did that. So...maybe this is just my mea culpa.

But if any of you bitches trash a final dress that I might be in, don't think I won't find you.

Yes...there should be another winkie emoticon there.

As an audience member, I don't want to JUST read the good stuff. I want a balanced and honest opinion. While I get into the city often, and get to see quite a lot, I still want to spend my theater dollars wisely.

The REASONS why people do and don't like things are what helps me make those choices...not just that a show has fans. Rock of Ages has gads of fans....but it is so NOT a show I would enjoy. WHAT people had to say, good and bad, helped me realize that, personally, I would be MISERABLE in the audience.

And I'd put a cute little emoticon here too -- if I could ever figure out how to do it!

I guess as well, there is a bit of competition on here, who can get the first review on here, and this has just spilled over to dress rehersal.
