#1American Idiot or Promises, Promises
Posted: 5/11/10 at 3:05pm

Edit: I have decided on Lend Me a Tenor, Everyday Rapture, and La Cage Aux Folles as three of my shows, but I still need help deciding between American Idiot and Promises, Promises.
Also, if anyone knows about the website that explains the best seating for each of the theatres, please let me know. I was linked to it from this site before, but I forgot what is was.
Thanks!

you will not get any sort of consensus.

Tell us a few of your favorite shows, and some of your least favorite shows and we might be able to suggest more realistically.

Tenor
La Cage
Fela! (Although NOT everyone's taste. I loved it OFF B'way.)

That's all I can reccommend. I've seen AI, ALNM & Rapture as well -- but cannot whole hearted reccommend them -- although others will quite disagree with me.

Last thought: the current revival of South Pacific is stunning if you haven't seen it and it has posted it's closing!

"Fela", "La Cage", and what about a play? "Red", "Fences" are both great !!!

No...I don't think most would tell you AI over PP. I think you will get an even split.

I have no opinion as I have no desire to see PP. As far as AI -- it's good-ish, not great.

I love the music for American Idiot, and I tend to like what Mayer does with shows. I love Spring Awakening, RENT, and other rock-opera-ish, powerful shows. But I also like fun shows, if they're also good. I feel like I'd be willing to sacrifice the fact that this particular production isn't the greatest ever since I love the score and it looks very funny. It's a tough choice!

See Promises, Promises. It's a fantastic, big Broadway musical that never takes itself too seriously. Idiot felt like a very expensive, very pretentious senior performance art thesis project.

The audiences for both show are on polar opposite sides of the musical theatre chart.

I happen to like classic Broadway (though I think Promises often falls into post-Golden Age/Sondheim era territory) and rock musicals. I love RENT and Spring Awakening. I don't think Idiot comes even close to being a milestone (or even small dent) in Rock Opera history.

Sean Hayes is giving the best male performance in a musical on Broadway this season, in my opinion.

If you like rock musicals, see Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson at the public.

Mildred, you make a very good case for Promises. I'm interested to hear the opinion of everyone else on here. I just feel like at this point I'd enjoy Promises more than Idiot. Plus, I've seen two shows at the St. James already (Producers/Gypsy) and I've never been in the Broadway before.

And I would see Bloody Bloody but I'm going July 6-8, so I'll just miss it.

+1, saw it yesterday and one word, Wonderful, yes he is!

American Idiot is good music and a good time, but IMO a bit shallow. Promises Promises, a bit quirky/corny at times but the performances alone make up for it.

While Hayes is fantastic in "Promises," I felt that when he wasn't on stage, the entire thing lagged and kind-of bored me. "Idiot" was fast-paced and while it isn't the most amazing piece of work on Broadway right now (fast from it), it was entertaining and to me, moreso than "Promises."

chiuptown, I've heard mixed things about the current cast, but the direction is quite brilliant and probably the best you're gonna see in a production of HAIR. If this is your only chance to see it, go!

I went into AI really expecting and wanting to like it.......,but. jeez, it was too loud and it seemed like a concert, with barely a plot or a time to like the characters. Great performances, but maybe I was just not into the whole suburban, straight boy, burnt out slacker whining about life.
I liked PP, though. It was fun, good music, set in a era long gone, but worth it
