American Shows, re-packaged and re-exported with a Made in England Stamp???

With the recent announcement that La Cage and A little Night Music opening in New York and Sunday in the Park with George recently went to Broadway, all shows come from the Menier stable, which is British. What other American shows have been re-done by the British and exported to New York?

John Doyle's Sweeney Todd - began at the Watermill and eventually went on to win the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.

Cameron and Trevor Nunn's production of OKLAHOMA - which many say to be the best one ever done.

Cameron and Trevor Nunn's MY FAIR LADY (though, it didn't go to Broadway - it is certainly known out there).

Does MARY POPPINS count as a re-invention of an American musical turned amazing by a British creative team?

The National Theatre's production of Carousel which transferred to Lincoln Centre is probably one of the best versions of the show, The Donmar production of Cabaret which transferred to Broadway via Roundabout and had a healthy run.

We do seem to do revivals better than our American counterparts most of the time, The Donmar Guys and Dolls was superior to the one that was recently on Broadway, The Sound of Music was very well done as well.

For years, I've been telling my fellow New Yorkers that most of the really terrific revivals of American musicals were the ones I saw in London.

PAL JOEY - 1980 production with Denis Lawson and Sian Phillips

WONDERFUL TOWN - nobody tops Maureen Lipman

GUYS & DOLLS - 1982 National Theatre with Julia McKenzie, Bob Hoskins, Julkie Covington and Ian Charleson

IRENE - 1976 with Julie Anthony, who had a voice that shook the rafters

SHOW BOAT - 1971 .... how can you do better than Cleo Laine?

....and all the ones already mentioned!

TimesSquareRegular, the IRENE revival that opened in London in 1976 actually was the West End presentation of a production that originated in Australia in 1974. It in turn was a redesigned/restaged version of the Debbie Reynolds Broadway revival of 1973.

Well, since this production of the 1919 musical was "redesigned/restaged" and recast, I still regard it as a new "revival" that we didn't see in NYC. At any rate, it was much more satisfying that the Broadway version, despite the charm and talent of Debbie Reynolds.

Should of known better than not mention The Watermills 'Sweeny Todd', that Bob be on the case. lol

Was Cameroon Mackintosh's Oklohoma any good in new York? If I remember it played about 300 shows at the Gershwin, did it make money?

Is there anymore we sent back?

The Mackintosh/Nunn Oklahoma! was not particularly well-received in New York, if I remember correctly. I don't think they liked the idea of a British director doing his take on what is really a very American show. To be fair, the production was far from perfect, but I enjoyed it in London and two friends of mine who saw both said that the London production was far better than the NY transfer.
