Just got back, All I can say is WOW....They were both on their A-GAME and both voices were superb as always. It was just a wonderful evening and the second act was just beautiful. More to come later....................

I'm seeing the LuPone in Key West later this week. I'm hoping for great vocals and some sort of insane breakdown...

I was at the Toronto opening last night. Both are fantastic entertainers but the real gem of the evening is an extended sequence from CAROUSEL in the second half. While both Patti and Mandy are too old to do a revival of the show the acting in the bench scene reveals two performers with a deep understanding of the characters they are portraying.

I have a few minor quibbles: Many has developed (over years of concerts and solo recording) an unusual rubato where he rushes into the next line almost before the current line has finished. I notice he does this a lot after an especially poignant line as if he wanted to distance himself from the emotion of it. Over the years too his voice has darkened and it takes more effort to reach that upper register, but when he does as in the a-Capella rendition of "Pennies from Heaven" at the curtain call, the result is still spine tingling.

Patti too has her vocal tricks. ( fellow reviewer complained at intermission that she always seems to be around the note rather on it. She does scoop a lot, and delights in using a wide-mouthed enunciation mimicking the Midwestern accent of Arkansas-born Nellie Forbush. Yet, she too can raise the goose bump level going full-out for Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and a simple understated "What's the use of Wond'rin'."

The long medleys are fun, but sometimes you wish they would give the audience a chance to applaud individual numbers. On teh other hand, in the SOUTH PACIFIC and CAROUSEL sequences they segue into dialogue without a break in an attempt to create a mood, and proves very effective.

The opening night crowd was in rapture and didn't want to let them go.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I covered this @ the Prine in Philly in 2007. I beleive it was the premiere of this duet concert, as I was told.

All I can say is that the Philly audience was thrilled with them. It was probably one of my favorite duet concerts along side concerts with Barbara Cook & Audra McDonald @ The Kimmel, a special appearance concert with composers Maltby & Shire in Nyack and a hand full of others.

Sure, they are both way beyond doing Carousel...but the chemistry, comedy and class in still in tact. They are wonderful together, imo.

"I covered this @ the Prine in Philly in 2007. I beleive it was the premiere of this duet concert, as I was told."

Sorry, but you were given incorrect information. The very first "An Evening With Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin" was in September 2002 in Richarson, Texas. I should know... I was there. I'm attending my 3rd "A.E.W.P.L.A.M.P" show on March 25, 2010 here in Austin, Texas...

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

Well, whipping out your cell phone would pretty much guarantee both happening.... :P

(btw, I hope you don't mind me quoting you in my signature... hehe)

Patti Fanatic~ I suppose you would know if you were there.
My comment was based on the PR I was given about their "first stage appearance together since Evita"...or something to that affect. Perhaps facts were off on their part.

Regardless, it's great chemistry and a must see for Patti/Mandy fans. Yes, I too was waiting for fireworks or at least an unexpected episode or two from them, but it didn't happen. Instead there is a lot of talent, love and fun going on up there. I especially enjoyed the dueling rolling chairs! Enjoy!

Just saw the show. enjoyed it immensley but I really wish Mandy would reduce using the falsetto tone. Yea Patty occ is"not on" w some of her notes but still ya can forgive a lot when they do an incredible medley from Merrily We Roll Along. The very clever rolling chairs choreography has been justly touted before but still it was great to see it live up to the rep. These are two old pros who clearly love what they are doing and love doing it with each other. I guess I just wish they's also have chosen something a little latter than say 1976 altho that obviously would have meant changing some of the "plotting".
Oh and yes she is phenomonal in" Argentina" but really blasts it w "Everythings Coming Up Roses" (as I well remember from "Gypsy")

I'm going on March 3rd and I'm excited already. Interestingly, Stephen Sondheim will be about a mile away at the Harris Theatre on Thursday evening. I wonder if the 3 of them will get together at some point.

I would be a bigger queen than all the queens in boystown if Patti and Sondheim walked in the door of sidetrack arm and arm...hahaha.
