Announced replacements that never happened

Patti LuPone discusses a similar incident in her book regarding "The Baker's Wife."

David Merrick called a meeting after a performance of the pre-Broadway tour stop in San Francisco and offered the company the option to drop a city from the tour, return to New York, and re-rehearse the show for 9 weeks.  If a performer made more than $500 per week, there would be no rehearsal pay. Any actors making less than $500 per week would enter negotiation with the Merric

Correct.  Your bag was screened as you walked through the poles.

I go to many arenas, concert venues and theaters, and it's very interesting to see how the s

Elaine Hendrix has Broadway plans “in the works”

n2nbaby said: "She is going to be doing Hello, Dolly! at OFC in Rochester at the beginning of the year."

I'm traveling a few hours to see her in this, but I had never heard of this regional theater until her casting announcement.  They certainly seem to get some interesting "names" to appear in their productions (Garrett Clayton and Jodi Benson within the last few years). It looks to be a very small performing space in a strip mall plaza.  Has

Collection of 1931-1973 Broadway Footage Released!!

I'd wondered about this collection and whether or not it was located near the Los Angeles fires. Glad to see it's still intact, and that it's finally being properly digitized and shared with the community!

Phantom OBC Archival Video Recording at Lincoln Center

I'd looooove to know from whence this came, and if there's more / all of the show somewhere!

The uploader of this video explains in the description exactly where this comes from... a news segment interview with Sondheim, discussing "Send In The Clowns" in particular, shortly after the show had opened.

Since the uploader was able to access the raw audio and video footage, it sadly seems there isn't anything else available.

What I find most amusing/interesting is Glynis Johns' film and television instincts kicking in, and her looking directly into the camera for a moment, then catching herself and quickly looking away.  (She was probably directed to ignore the camera and not play to it while this was being filmed).

Phantom OBC Archival Video Recording at Lincoln Center

Jordan Catalano said: "The video at Lincoln center is a gorgeous, broadcast quality video. "

I'm most intrigued to learn more about the actual audio and video quality.  I always keep my expectations low, to avoid disappointment, and I hope to be pleasantly surprised when I do eventually see this recording the next time I travel to NYC.

How does the quality and filming style compare to the original Broadway press reel footage, as seen here?

Dark VHS tape quality, or better?  How sharp is the image?  I've always wondered how much compression occurs when they transfer the older recordings from analog tape to digital.

Jordan, your description above gives me hope!

Disney will launch North American tour of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST in 2025

Does this use the Angela Lansbury narration during the prologue?

Report: The Phantom of the Opera May Be Readying an Off-Broadway Return

Lot666 said: "At about 7:50am, I received an email regarding tickets going on sale at 10:00am. I navigated to the page at around 9:40am. At 10:00am, the page refreshed and indicated that there were already more than 5,000 people ahead of me and the wait would be about 55 minutes."

It said the same thing to me, but that rapidly decreased, and at 10:15 it just let me in.

Charles Strouse has passed.

I absolutely love the original cast recording of "Nightingale" with Sarah Brightman. He wrote such a clever, catchy score with great wit in the lyrics. It's one of those recordings you listen to and really feel you get a complete sense of the show and story... no visuals required.

Honestly? Optics.

I’ve walked through the metal detectors with my phone in my pocket (mistakenly)more than once in the past, and I’ve never had the metal detector go off.

I worry that half of these security implementations at theaters are just to make people “feel” safe

Jamie Lloyd-helmed EVITA revival to play the London Palladium in 2025

Apologies in advance if this has been mentioned earlier in the thread.

I saw Andrew Lloyd Webber last Wednesday as part of the Speaker Series in Pittsburgh.  He talked about Jamie Lloyd's production of "Sunset Boulevard" and briefly touched on him directing "Evita" in London.  He said Lloyd's vision of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is to have Eva perform it from the Palladium's front facade balcony, addressing any passersby o

caOrville Peck - Masked or Unmasked?

binau said: "If this was the Sam Mendes production it would be poweful in the finale if he removed the mask, all exposed in the uniform etc."

I'm guessing he'll remain in his smaller mask throughout the performance. Would be cool if during the drumroll at the end, he moves to take off the mask just as the blackout occurs.  Maybe you get a very brief blink-and-you-miss-it glimpse.

Since the mask is such an important part of his stage persona, would

They'd certainly have to re-work the beginning of Act 2.

Trying to choreograph an outdoor walk in each city would be a logistical and security nightmare.  A more feasible strategy would be to have him walk indoors from backstage to the lobby area, or just through the auditorium. But again, this would have to be

Kit Connor’s Car Chased By Fan From R&J Stage Door

Both of those sound like a walk in the park compared to the insanity that was the original "Sunday In The Park With George" stage door...

GYPSY Previews

Can anyone who went last night (or who goes in the near future) elaborate on the mezz sightlines? I'm trying to figure out if row E center mezz will be too obstructed as far as anything happening on the passarelle.

Thanks

Gavin Creel's WALK ON THROUGH Available To Watch For Free

Wonderful! I attended a concert of Gavin's in May and he spoke about this project with a lot of affection.  How lucky for all of us that it was professionally preserved and we can now see it.

Phantom of the Opera Returns!

bwayphreak234 said: "The Laurence Connor helmed tour was an abomination of epic proportions. It was ghastly - tacky, ugly, and just really, really bad."

Add to that a few directorial choices which simply made no sense to the story.

While we know better that it's not our beloved original staging, I agree with the comments that it's better to tour this than the Laurence Connor version.  The average subscription theatergoers in the U
