I was thumbing through Newsday when I got home a few minuets ago and on the cover of one of it's sections they had an interesting article about the whole reality auditon idea. Aperently, Webber hated the Grease one and it talked about how he said that these kinds of shows can be good when done right and that Your the one that I want wasn't. It also mentioned that he has reality shows planned for Evita, Superstar, Joseph, and starlight. I personlly don't know why he is doing a realiy show for Joseph because that was at the New London theatre only a couple of years ago. I also for that matter don't know why he is doing an Evita one because that one just closed in London eiather it did close or is going to soon.

Doesn't surprise me.
He looked bored to tears when they [cough, forced him, cough] had him on there.

Maybe he is planning the reality show for Evita for over here to cast the possible Broadway transfer?

There was a similar article in last Sunday's LA TIMES. Webber denounced the GREASE show but agreed, along with Kathleen Marshall that the concept of casting through a reality show has huge merits - essentially allowing the creative team the chance to actually work with performers (many of whom they would never otherwise get to see at all) instead of casting somebody after a ten minute audition.

To be fair I'm no supporter of ALW but he impressed me when he was on the show--he offered the only really good critiques fo the performances, and ina surprisingly nice polite way, I had seen and made some good points liek the fact that he wished the contestants had more range--all of the girls and all the boys were awfully samey which does seem to defeat the purpose a bit

I don't think someone off the streets can handle singing Evita 8x a week unless they've been trained like that. What would the show be called? "Don't Cry For Me America"? Dumb. The show didn't even get good ratings, why would they do another one?

I agree Rentboy - I can't imagine another major network doing another Broadway reality show after GREASES' horrific ratings - but even with a program on a small network like Bravo - a Broadway reality show could easily build up a multi-million dollar advance. So I doubt theatre producers will stop trying casting from reality entertainment...

"but even with a program on a small network like Bravo"

yeah, Bravo will do anything when it comes to Reality contests. They should do a reality show to find the best dog walker in America...I don't think that one's been done yet.

Look at the advance ticket sales. The high number of advanced ticket sales came rom people watching the show. I think that is a huge reason why producers are going to try to do this again. Not even caring at all that pretty much everyone in the broadway community hated this show with a passion.

I wonder though. I know Webber is going to produce more of these reality casting shows and I think I read somewhere that if they do another one in American he will be involved. You think that he would try harder to make them more to the success of shows like " How do you find someone to play maria?" What I wonder is if it is the whole idea of casting a broadway show in a reality show that is a bad idea or if it was just how this one was done that made it suck.

Keep in mind, that America is pretty much the only country that proudces reality TV by the tons. I mean yes there is reality tv in England and American Idol was based off a show called UK idol and all that. But, only in America can you find a realty show that talks about how annoying 16 year old girls spent tons of money on their birthday party. Only in America are there reality shows that shove people on to some random island and seperate them into teames based on race.

Why didn't they take the hint from YTOTIW? Oy. If they ruin Evita for me, someone's getting killed. *cough*AndrewLloydWebber*cough*

"How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?" was actually worth watching - they got a diverse group of contestants, and the judges (including ALW) gave good feedback and were called upon to justify their comments. The first two episodes of Joseph are showing promise as well, though I'm not sure they got the same variety in the contestants as Maria did. I guess we'll know for certain when the live shows start.

Also saw the first episode of the UK Grease series. Just as awful as the US one.
