While Laura Osnes would be great as Anastia, I'm pretty sure that she's trying to move on from the princess/ingenue roles.
Gottcha, thanks Tag!
The villain role sounds interesting enough. Marc Kudish could still play him ;p He's a little older than the break-down but whatever haha
Does anyone know if the presentation of this workshop will be invite-only? I've seen them sell tickets to readings occasionally, but I only just moved to New York recently and never paid much attention to that sorta thing before...

"The adaptation will focus on the relationship between Anastasia and Dimitri, and whether or not she is truly Anastasia- which is really the conflict of the story anyway. "
The character of Gleb seems interesting, much more plausible than Rasputin.

I would not like Laura Osnes to play Anya.
I don't know why it didn't occur to me before that Dmitri would probably sing but now I'm interested in how much they may have expanded their romance and what kinds of songs he's gotten.
Why does Gleb need to have "dangerous sexuality"? Love triangles make me nervous. Though at least him being in love with Anya will probably mean a better balance between the romantic and the political.
FINALLY

Excellent. This could be on Broadway by 2017, that is amazing.

As I thought, it seems the stage musical is using both the 1956 and 1997 films as its source material so it'll likely be a new story but with elements from both similar to how Mary Poppins used both the film and the books as its source material for the stage version.
Darko Tresnjak says it's going to be an epic musical with a cast of 21 so it'll be interesting how it'll be staged.
Does this mean Little Dancer is on the back burner?
If this would be on broadway by 2017 does that mean it would be in direct competition with frozen?
Let's not give a Tony to Frozen until it at least opens.

This is very exciting! I won't get to see the Hartford production, but fingers crossed for a swift move to Broadway.
I do hope they still intend to keep the songs from the '97 movie, like they said they would for the workshops. Especially Once Upon A December and Journey To The Past are so close to my heart, but I also love Learn To Do It a lot...
Otherwise, sure, I trust them to go ahead and make it the best show they possibly can. I think I always loved the story behind the movie more than then actual movie, so I can see how there is room for improvement, and also making it more a period piece than a kids show, which I think I will appreciate. We have enough Disney for kids shows. Bring it on!!

^Plus, we don't even know if Anastasia is coming to Broadway yet. Frozen has already been confirmed for Broadway while this is just staged in CT. Hoping for a Broadway transfer though!!!!

According to the various articles, the film songs are being kept but I believe someone here said In The Dark of the Night is cut as it was Rasputin's song and he's been cut from the stage adaptation.

I wonder how they'll stage "At the Beginning". I really liked that one from the movie.
Hartford Stages looks like it's a thrust configuration. Wonder how they'll deal with this being so epic? Seems too big for that space.
It seems to me that the dramatic intensity of the tale of "Anastasia" lies in its mystery. Was she or was she not Grand Duchess Anastasia? We now know that NO, she was simply a fraud, or crazy. Anastasia was murdered in 1917 with the rest of her family. When original source material was developed, for the play and movie, that simple fact was not known. Now it is. Mystery over.

lol, I don't think most people's enjoyment of Anastasia has anything to do with what 'really' happened. It's a lovely film with lovely music.
Exactly. I know there wasn't really a French prince who was turned into a monster and hid in a creepy castle with talking objects, but I still love Beauty and the Beast. This version of "Anastasia" is nothing more or less than a fairy tale with a tiny, tiny bit of history mixed in. And I for one couldn't be happier to hear this- I've thought it would make a great musical since I was a little girl, and I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Rasputin isn't even IN the stage adaptation? What's the point of living, then?

My wife a d I finally saw Frozen and no idea what all the big fuss is about. For us, putting it on stage would not change our feelings on it. To those who liked it, to each his own and enjoy. We just were not enamored by it.

Check out the first page of this topic, they replaced Rasputin with another villain. Is he inspired by the 56 film? It sounds to me like they are taking the magic mostly out of this adaption, which is fine with me. Sad for the song, I thought it was great, but mabye they'll just come up with new lyrics and keep the melody? I don't know if that would work for this new character.
