I like your idea Joe. When did they do that? I'd love to know more.

I seriously don't get the point of having a "theme," but that's just me. Last year the only thing that reflected the theme was the opening number.
Anyway, this has been a really active season, especially for new musicals and play revivals. There could be more new plays, but the ones that have come are good. Maybe the range of the new musicals could be greater- we don't have things as completely different as Caroline, or Change and Avenue Q competing this time around- but I'd say the sheer number of them, even if you leave out the jukebox creatures, is somewhat encouraging.
Wow. I'm so excited for this.
Ditto *head scratch* on the theme. The Oscars and Emmy's don't have a theme. Why in the world do they Tony's need one when said "theme" isn't carried through the show?
when are the nominations annouced?

I don't know, I would disagree. Spamalot and Light in the Piazza are very different.
I personally don't care about the theme all together. It doesn't really affect the show at all. Its like when everyone would make a big stink about prom colors. All that really effected was the invitations. *shrugs* Who cares?

i am so excited for this years tonys!!! its going to be so exciting- competition is fierce in some of the big catagories. i think this season has been amazing, personally.
Great theme. Would love to see Hugh Jackman with the long hair again. He is a HOT ticket, for sure!

He's barely got any hair right now. Though thankfully it appears his eyebrows have grown back.
the Tony awards used to often have themes but for many years now, the Tonys are usually "themeless." In the past the most famous TONYs was the 25th anniversary Tonys where they did snippets from each 25 winning Best Muscials. One year they themed the work of Richard Rodgers and Ethel Merman. One year they did the "Tonys through Bonnie Franklin's eyes" (that was bizarre.) The year A CHORUS LINE won the theme was how prior winners reacted to winning, such as whether they cried, or screamed or jumped, etc...........Most years the Tony awards have no theme. There was a time when they tried to think up themes that would attract ratings. CLEARLY, with Hugh Jackman as the host again, they have given up on trying to improve Tony ratings. It seems the ratings just keep getting lower. While an appropriate host, Mr. Jackman has proven to be nothing of a ratings draw. IT is a shame nothing was worked out with Billy Crystal, currently a "very hot" Broadway star. Perhaps this would have bumped the ratings a bit.
Intersting year in a lot of ways. W the loss of Coleman, Orbach et al AND it being Sondheims's 75th yr- seems like a lotta time could be taken up w tributes. (Not that they aren't deserved but that clock DO keep ticking)
sabrelady, lots of folks were lost this year.......Arthur Miller, Fred Ebb, Dorothy Loudon, so many others..........It would be nice if they "at least" devoted a segment to some of the music given to the world by Cy Coleman and Fred Ebb.(Ebb was primarily a book writer and lyricist, but what the heck, Kander's music would be a welcome pleasure on the Tonys.)
That is what I mean. These people DO deserve some special recognition but how to accomodate the appropriate respect w the time constraints AND the actual awards & the musical performances? ( Hmmm maybe that is part of the reference, some of B'ways Best &Brightest are gone?)

The annual dwindling ratings clealry show that few (other than those of us here) care about this show. The telecast, in recent years, has presented musical numbers which were weak on selling tickets to those who never heard of Norbert, Idina, Eden, Cheyenne and other local favorites. Maybe the telecast directors could find a little time time each year to honor the great musicals of the past which the majority of people know from the film adaptations or local productions - Sound of Music, Mr Fair Lady, and recently Chicago. This year, we have 2 films adapted to the musical theater (Chitty and Spamalot)which contain songs the masses already know and can relate to. Let's use these numbers to broaden our viewer base and woo viewers and potential ticket buyers all over the world. The Tony show has been too limited in its appeal and the ratings have suffered.

How about tickets? Anybody know when they go on sale? I would assume about the same time as nominations come out, but I'm not positive.

Wow, usually people who engage in illegal behaviour do it discreetly, but bootleggers tend to be so self centered that they spin wild stories that they are "Filling a need" or even doing a "service" by profiting from all the hard work by talented people over the years. Or they explain away their crimes by claiming that they donate a "Portion" of the profits to the Theatre Wing or Tsunami Relief or the Human Fund.
In any case, I hope that "Tony Awards" (AKA Glendower99) will be quickly put out of business by Broadway World, or the Wing, or (best of all) US law enforcement. Sale of Tony Broadcasts is absolutely illegal.
