re: And the biggest over-rated pile of crap is...

childcatcher...it's far from it. saying a show is overrated is not necessarily mean. I like The Lion King, but it was so over hyped that the first time i saw it, i was a little bit disappointed because it was so overrated it didn't live up to the hype. It's all personal opinion and i don't think anyone who's in the Lion King would take offence to my comment.

Basically a lot of shows have a reputation that's better than the show itself..i don't think anything we've said is vile. Bitchy? Yes. But come on, BWW West End wouldn't be as fun as it is, if it wasn't for us bitches.

lol id actually say the Dress Circle board is less bitchy than this one, out of DC, WOS and BWW, BWW is by far the bitchiest! lol

I think the problem is the 'pile of crap' comment not the overated comment. I dont think ive ever seen a show id honestly hand on heart call crap (hmm actually just remembered The Wedding Singer which I think I might as I was close to walking out of it), even Priscilla and Blonde which I REALLY didnt like, when it comes down to it I wouldnt call crap(although I have done in the past...so slapped wrist for me).

But when people talk (especially on online forums) about a subject they feel passionate about people exagerate and use strong words to help get their point accross (or in some cases just to be controversial) that they possibly wouldnt use in day to day life.

As for performers being offended, if they are just by an online comment in an insignificant discussion forum then they are in the wrong business. Theatre (and the entertainment industry in general) is cut throat and bitchy as they come, you need to be tough and just shrug it off.

I loved The Lion King the first and only time I saw it, keep meaning to go back to see it again, maybe in January when I can get a cheap ticket.

Childcatcher 2, this thread isn't personal to anyone, it just people airing there views, theatre will always be subjective.

How awful it must be for a cast and creatives to read horrendous reviews after press night, especially when the team invest months and months of time in it, but it happen, get over it.

Oh and to use The Wedding Singer (Uk Tour) as an example. Performers know when they are in a naff show most of the time. Knowing someone who did the Wedding Singer tour, they (and other company members) knew it was crap, and couldnt wait to get out of it. But at the end of the day its a job and they were professionals and got on with it.

I was in a 3 month tour of 'Kiss Me Kate' back a few decades and it got slaughtered- absolutely mutilated.
We stuck it out for nearly 3 hard months. The audiences got smaller and smaller as time went on.
Then one day we were called to the stage and told the next week would be our last.
The producers and director along with an 81 year old choreographer killed the show dead within the first few days of rehearsals and from then on we were on our own.
Every local paper basically warned the public to stay from this one!
Tou cant love being subject to all that.
We all had our say almost every day about being in such a a car crash.
It ain't fun being in crap!
Not long after this tour the RSC announced that they were doing a big production at The Old Vic which was stunning.

I think the point is shows that disappoint you personally after hearing all the hype, for my while Lion King was boring (to me not the 100s of kids surroudning me clearly) I wasn't expecting much so that doesn't win my prize for over-rated. I grew up hearing about 'Cats' -some of the first songs I learnt were from that show, and then when I saw a very tired touring production many many years later I was disappointed-it was like this is it? that's overrated in imo.

It's also why I'd never go and see Joseph-I can't take two childhood memories destroyed re: And the biggest over-rated pile of crap is...

re: And the biggest over-rated pile of crap is...

The tours of 'Cats' never really did work for me. Part of its appeal (if you think it had one) was the way it was staged in the New London Theatre. I've seen quite a few productions elsewhere, and while the casts have mostly been very good, I came to the conclusion that it just doesn't work in a traditional theatre. The London production was certainly not a great musical, but it could be a lot of fun. All IMHO, of course!

Perhaps that is it-I saw it from the very back of a huge theatre in Montreal which meant a lot of the 'magic' was lost-I don't hate the show I was just disapointed

Sooner or later could not put it better myself, never understood why British and American audiences loved this so much, especially as I have seen better musicals fair a lot lot worse!

re: And the biggest over-rated pile of crap is...

I have to agree with Jonwo that Billy Elliot (while nowhere near 'crap') wasn't anywhere near as good as I had been lead to believe either. Maybe if I'd seen an early version in London... (although the current Broadway production I saw is raved over and well-rewarded too, so maybe not)? Loved the film though.

I was also majorly disappointed with The Lion King and Cats - I found both productions I saw far too earnest and showy, with no real heart and not a lot of plot to keep my interest.
Seen some shows in my time....

re: And the biggest over-rated pile of crap is...

Darlinks,
I have no problem with someone calling something overated or they were disappointed in something but the comments about shows being "a big pile of crap" and "unimaginitive" are How can you call cats unimaginitive did you watch it with a bag over your head and head phones on ? Everyone is entitled to an opinion my point was merely mine.
The only one I can think of was Plan 9 from outer space with luke Goss in it ! Now that was a steaming pile of horse crap with zero production value, I left at half time, Lukey did look good in the short shorts though !
Mama dear, you are prob the only person that can remember this show ....
