re: And the biggest over-rated pile of crap is...

***The Lion King - the glorious memory I have from seeing the OBC in New York was completely trashed when I went earlier this year in London. Besides the first 8 mins, the show is very longwinded and just kinda boring.****
BoyFromOz

BoyOZ boy am i with u on that one- i was a hopeless wreck seeing it that first time in New York and loved every second of it.
Fast forward to London- bored- did nothing for me!

Have to agree with the recent Blithe Spirit on Broadway, thought it was a really poor and boring production, sole reason to see it (and its saving grace) is Angela Lansbury and the majority of the cast.

and 'lemontree' your comment about agreeing with benny made me laugh as I thought that to! lol

Agree on Wicked but understand it has its audience.

Spamalot I thought was hyped about right, lasted about the right length and belongs on tour.

Jersey boys I've almost blanked out.

"Wicked. All style, no substance. Dissapointment" Here here.

Ive never cared for guys and dolls!!!!

I dont think R&H shows can all be called over-rated.... i think some (Carousel) are, but others are beautifully written shows- it just depends on the production.

I think the current "La Cage" revival is over-rated. I enojyed it but didnt think it was the best thing on the London stage this year....

Spring Awakening is over-rated in my opinion.

Andrew Lloyd Webber in general, I think, is over-rated. Do enjoy a good "Joseph Mega-Mix" every now and then though!!!

Can't agree about Carousel being in any way overrated - it is R & H's greatest masterwork. Sondheim once commented that he regards it as THE greatest musical of all time. When it was written it more or less redefined musical theatre - and I think that the "Park Bench scene" ("If I Loved You", etc.) is still one of the most brilliantly written scenes in the history of musical theatre - a Master Class in how to write a musical.

Possibly if you are simply judging it by the latest revival at the Savoy, it does not come over as well as it might - but that's the fault of the lackluster production, not of the piece itself. Done well, it is still a fantasic show.

The "fuss" as you call it is explained in my last post. It was a groundbreaking show when it first opened - it literally changed the course of musical theatre.

I totally agree with Bob (and Sondheim) - Carousel is a revolutionary theatrical masterpiece that will go down in history as the greatest musical of the 20th century.

Yes Oklahoma came first, and will always be remembered as the fork in the road of the modern musical, but Carousel truly cemented the change - dealing with marital abuse and suicide in 1945 was very risky.

Plus, when performed well (aka sans projections and La Garrett) it can bring a tear to even the most cynical of folk.

I agree that Wicked is all style and no substance and the book is not great and some of the songs I skip over but it's still a good night at the theatre.

Not crap but I think Billy Elliot isn't as great as the critics say it is, the score is alright but forgettable save for a few songs but the cast and the choreography make up for it.

Not a fan of Blood Brothers, great story and some great songs but the actual musical itself drags on and when I saw a few years, it was tired.

re: And the biggest over-rated pile of crap is...

I am a bit outraged by this thread ! You may dislike something personally, but to call it over rated crap is pushing it a bit far in my opinion.
The first poster said CATS was "unimaginitive" that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. You may not personally like it but nobody could call it unimaginitive. It was ground breaking of its time, and did wonders for tourism as did most of ALW's biggies.
It is also offensive to all the actors and actresses that read this board who did/ may have appeared in these shows that they will be very proud of.
Can we all stop being horrible and keep your nasty opinions to yourselves.
You should all be hanging your heads in shame !
I'm suprised at you Mama and Songanddanceman !!

I have to say agree with childcatcher2 in regards to 'Cats'. I understand that it's not everybodys cup of tea, but I saw it in London as a child three times, and there is no denying that seeing it as a child really is a magical, theatrical experience. And I still love it now that I'm grown up! lol Just my two pennies worth! lol

re: And the biggest over-rated pile of crap is...

childcatcher2 i dont agree with you at all

I was in Fame for god knows how long and thats listed on here, i dont find it offencice at all. To be in a show you know if people respect it or not etc, Fame is a bad but silly fun show, it does HUGE business and does not deserve to.

This is a board where people share opinions, thats all it is, peoples opinions, much like what a critic says

If a show is on the list you love then you jyst shrug, its not telling you what is overated etc, its telling you what each person thinks is overrtaed, but please dont use the 'Actors would be offended' because we really wouldnt

If we are in shows like Cats, Fame, Grease etc, we know we are in big money making shows what have very little artistic merrit but great exposure.
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna
