Posted: 7/26/14 at 1:43pmI don't think Jane Lynch is quite old enough for this part yet.

How about Carole Kane? She might be good.
I still think Valerie Harper would be amazing...

Carol Burnett?
She may be too old for it now. Maybe? I think she would be great.

Posted: 7/26/14 at 7:26pmThey cast more petite ladies in the role for this production, probably due to the stunt work involved. (It just seems they cast smaller ladies.)

Posted: 7/27/14 at 7:38pmWhat about Kelly Bishop? She used to dance with ABT, and she's a Broadway vet and a TV star as well.

Posted: 7/27/14 at 7:47pmI think Kelly Bishop would be great but is she really that big of a draw for the general public. Speaking of Berthe, has the role been cast for the tour yet? I distinctly remember the had cast everything EXCEPT Berthe. Any news?

"I think Kelly Bishop would be great but is she really that big of a draw for the general public."
Probably more of a draw than either Priscilla Lopez or Tovah Feldshuh due to The Gilmore Girls.

Posted: 7/28/14 at 12:11amThat's true. I just don't know how many people would know her by name. Maybe if they had ads that said "Starring Kelly Bishop from TV's Gilmore Girls" or something of that extent.

I suppose in the mold of Arnaz, Gleason would now work.
I still think Ms. Harper would be incredible (and poignant)
my other picks remain:
Donna McKechnie
Carol Kane
Holland Taylor

You can't go too poignant, though... the revival's staging of "No Time at All" and portrayal of Berthe is something of a meta-reference to the original production. When Irene Ryan played a sixty-six-year-old "Granny" as a feisty but elderly old lady, she was representing the facts of aging and the view of seniors at her time. By casting actresses of the same age, but with youthful, energetic and athletic lifestyles, it's hard to see the staging of the number as anything but a commentary on "look how far we've come, and how much standards of living have improved in forty years!"
Debbie Harry would be a good Berthe- she's remained in great shape and is age-appropriate now.

Posted: 7/28/14 at 12:41pmI think Andrea Martin was pretty poignant in the role-as I said, there was a balance between the humor and the pathos. The words just took on a different meaning. I like that because it keeps the song grounded and out of the realm of silliness.

I think Lucia Arnaz is going to be terrific!
Here she is at an Actors Fund benefit, singing the Carolyn Leigh/Cy Coleman song "The Best Is Yet to Come":

Posted: 7/28/14 at 2:12pmPJ-I thought she was a wonderful choice! I am taking some family to see it (they live in FL). I don't know how long Ms. Arnaz's contract is, but I hope she's still in it (and John Rubinstein).

Gorgeous youtube clip! I loved the lady when I saw her on tour in SEESAW in... '74, was it?
She'd ace "No Time At All" for sure, and probably walk away with the whole of Act I!

Martin will also do the Los Angeles spot on the tour, from Oct. 21 - Nov. 9(3 weeks). I wonder if this was worked out when Arnaz signed up.

Posted: 7/30/14 at 12:23pmI had a feeling that would happen since she has a home base in LA, too. That's great. (Still looking forward to her NY return engagement.)
