Patti LuPone was in Driving Mrs. Daisy and that's a famous film. Some people may remember her from her sitcom "Life Goes On", too. But also, I think that when people see Andrew Lloyd Webber's name on it that will be enough. Still, people who will go to see this film, will still go even if they have no idea who Patty Lupone is. The Lay person had no idea who any of the cast in The Phantom of the Opera.
Still, if your not sold I've got a solution.....cast Hugh Jackman as the main guy....you can't say he doesn't have the name.

Posted: 2/6/05 at 5:10pmThey are big broadway names, but to people who don't know the first thing about theatre, many have not even heard of Andrew Lloyd Webber - it's not a big of a name as you'd think. And generally, people aren't usually impressed with Hugh Jackman's name. All this movies were terrible, and most people probably don't even know that he can actually act really well.

Posted: 2/6/05 at 5:20pmI think Woman in White has serious film potential. If they cast it right....which means people who can sing and act. (because someone apparently missed the boat on that with the POTO movie - save Patrick Wilson of course.)

Posted: 2/6/05 at 5:21pmi think hugh and anthony hopkins are big enough names. and lloyd webber's is more known now with his name on everything for phantom. i would really love to see meryl do this. not liza, not patti. MERYL. all the way. but the real question is betty schaeffer. in light of recent conversations anne hathaway?

I think there are several women who can play Norma. Not Liza and not Barbra. The emotion has to be there more than the voice. Even though she has to be able to sing. I personally do not like Hughs voice for Sunset. There are more able bodied singers. Anthony Warlow, Michael Ball, Rob Evan. Just to name a few

My wish list --
That Paramount agrees to the filming of SUNSET BOULEVARD. It is a great story of Hollywood, albeit it exposes the dark side. The movie classic from Billy Wilder can serve as a very good inspiration for a remake as a musical. Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical score is very dramatic and just right for this cynical look at the film-making business, as seen through the eyes of one of the main characters. I think the subject is appealing enough for broad movie audiences. After all, it had its beginning as a classic film noir!
That a new book/script be collaborated on, with some of the recitatives being reworked as fresh dialogue.
That Barbra Streisand be considered for the role - the voice is fading and her beauty is unconventional and also fading - but isn't this what Norma Desmond is all about? I liked her versions of WITH ONE LOOK and AS IF WE NEVER SAID GOODBYE, two of the show's main songs and certainly Norma's signature songs. She is a good actress and still a fine singer. I just hope she can work together with ALW and Paramount... If not Barbra, maybe Meryl Streep or Glenn Close? Can Annette Benning be a dark horse for the role?
That Hugh Jackman play the role of Joe Gillis. He has the look quite right, now ( he was too young when he did the show in 1997 in Australia) - more wordly, more mature and even more virile. I have seen snippets of songs and recitatives as well as whole songs performed by him from documentaries and newsclips from Australian TV - they are very good vocally speaking. I think he can improve on his version of the title song from 8 years ago - he can now do wonders with the song, seeing that his voice has developed a lot more ( please note his musical theatre singing voice in OKLAHOMA! and some of the more tender and powerhouse songs from THE BOY FROM OZ). He is a fine actor and can handle that role very well. I hope that the talks between him and ALW continue.
That the news about Anthony Hopkins is true. I have read that he is a real musician although I have not heard about his singing voice. But his acting chops could only be an asset to a movie of SUNSET BOULEVARD as a musical.
That a decision can be reached and filming started fairly soon!

Posted: 2/6/05 at 8:55pmI can't really see CATS working as a movie on the big screen, but there is just cause to release a more proper documentation of the piece. The current DVD version is horribly edited and cut almost to shreds when it comes to the dancing. so many times actors appear in one place and jump to another as a section of dance was removed or a few frames of film were dropped. obviously the main reason to do it all over again would be to have it filmed in front of a live audience (or appear to have been filmed for a live audience a la the Hugh Jackman OKLAHOMA!) as that will allow it to retain some of its magic on screen. as well they should restore "Growtiger's Last Stand", the extended Gumbie Cat Dance, the extended fight scene, extended Jellicle Ball and the rest of the forty minutes that was essentially removed from stage to screen... basically the project was fu*ked from the beginning when they did not have Trevor Nunn direct it. look at what he did for the staged OKLAHOMA! and then try to imagine what he could have done for CATS. it's a shame. it won't happen, but it should. hopefully if the show does return to the west end as rumored they will release a new CD with the entire show recorded and documented. Posted: 2/6/05 at 9:15pmjust a little fyi, there was a commercial right now (during the superbowl) for the shield, michael chiklis's show on fx and glenn close will be joining the show for the season. thought it was funny in light of this conversation
#36re: Andrew Llloyd Webber's Next Film?
Posted: 2/6/05 at 9:44pmAs much as I am a giant, unashamed CATS fan, putting it on the big screen would be a giant mistake.

I'm not so fussed about seeing another ALW film. I think they should just stick to filming the stage productions - even if they do what cats did and have the cameras rolling about the stage. At least you know you're gonna get REAL talent - so what if it doesn't have any mass appeal.
my two cents

For all those saying Liza Minelli should play Norma in sunset blvd, am i the only one that realises her voice is completely awful?!
I've always hated her. She squeezes her voice, and she's not that great an actress either.
PLEASE DON'T RUIN SUNSET BLVD WITH LIZA!!!!!
GLEN CLOSE ALL THE WAY! or Merryl Streep.
And don't get Hugh Jackman either. As much as i like his voice, i hate his acting, and i don't think his voice'd suit it either.
Get Anthony Warlow, or Michael Ball.

On another interview ( written by the same one who wrote about the ALW interview which started this thread), Meryl Streep was supposed to have been asked also about SUNSET BOULEVARD. The interviewer said she wasn't coy either about wanting the role.
Who will Paramount bless
EDIT : Sorry, I meant Glenn Close was interviewed. Meryl was supposed to be also in talks about the role, as reported in an item in London's SUNDAY MAIL more than a month ago.

Posted: 2/7/05 at 9:11amI can see Meryl Streep in the role. More so than a lot of the ladies mentioned. But wouldn't it be novel to allow theatre people to do the motion picture.

Theatre people --
Barbra was in FUNNY GIRL
Glenn was in SUNSET BOULEVARD and has been announced for A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC in 2006
Meryl Streep - it is likely that she has also appeared onstage in a dramatic play ( she did go to the Drama School in Yale)
Hugh Jackman - SUNSET BOULEVARD, OKLAHOMA!, and THE BOY FROM OZ
Anthony Hopkins - it is likely that he has also appeared onstage in a dramatic play
Theatre people who also have movie experience --
Sounds like good casting to me

I hope Liza does the film and that she knocks all our socks off and shatters us with her brilliance as she did in live performances for decades. The woman used to absolutely slay me in her concerts!
And again, I love how MINNELLI starring in the film of the musical is a VERY similar casting choice to GLORIA SWANSON starring in the original film SUNSET BOULEVARD.
I mean no offense to Liza at all by this. But SUNSET BOULEVARD was a great comeback for Ms. Swanson who was considered faded and long past her prime, playing a star who is faded and past her prime.
Many would consider this very similar casting if the magical Minnelli starred in the film version of the musical.

From the February 6 Hollywood Reporter, quoting Glenn Close, at
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/film/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000789867
The actress also said that she had spoken with Andrew Lloyd Weber about bringing "Sunset Boulevard" from Broadway to the big screen. "I would love to see it made into a movie," Close whispered.
