Really excited that SOR is finally becoming a musical, but Andrew L. Webber? O.o Intersting choice, but I'll take it!

Quite possibly the best thing I've read on here.

Lloyd Webber is the exact opposite person this project needs, especially with his alleged disdain for rock music, post-Evita.
Now, if he's producing and getting someone with an actual foot in rock music since the early Seventies to write some songs, that would be different. Paging Tim Minchin anyone?

Posted: 4/6/13 at 12:31amAgreed that Andrew Lloyd Webber is the wrong person for this but I would love to see his son take this project. It's a little more up his alley.

Posted: 4/6/13 at 9:25amI love the movie, but ALW??? REALLY?! Eh, maybe they'll have Jack Black reprise his role for the stage.

Posted: 4/6/13 at 11:14amThis could totally work as a musical. He's not writing the music, right? He's just producing. So who cares? He obviously knows how to put on some spectacle.

Agreed!
Personally, I think Lord Lloyd-Webber's productions suffer from a lack of focus (most recent case in point: His inability to 'finalize' Love Never Dies even a year after its official opening in the West End).
Why, when he's still hemming and hawing over completing his Profumo Affair musical, is he clouding his focus by producing SOR? Perhaps it will afford him further excuses for not completing the task at hand... >DOH!<

Posted: 4/7/13 at 11:18amI personally don't understand why Lloyd Webber would go for this. Sure I can see the material's stage potential. I mean music is the film's main driving force and it does already have songs in it, albeit ones that do not function to progress the narrative (though come to think of it, one could actually get rid of the film's pre-existing songs and replace them with new ones, therefore creating an entirely original score) but even so, I don't think that he is the right composer to pen the music. If anything, it needs a more contemporary, rock-orientated composer - someone like Broadway's Tom Kitt, Lin-Manuel Miranda or even Jason Robert Brown. From the UK, Tim Minchin is a better choice for SCHOOL OF ROCK - he has a "rockier" and "edgier" sensibility so could potentially write a great musical adaptation of this. Although, I can't say that I'm itching to see this as a musical. I'm fed up with movie-to-musical adaptations!

Tim Minchin just did a season on Californication, the roman a clef series about Hollywood insiders and outsiders, as a character whose inspiration appeared to be fifty percent Axl Rose, fifty percent Russell Brand. During his run as the character, Minchin performed a number of songs as Atticus Fetch, rock legend whose career descent (parallel to Guns n' Roses being unable to produce their followup album) heralded the end of the metal and classic rock eras.
The songs were great. I totally bought them as being authentic and of their era, while they fit the character and situations. Minchin has a gift for bridging genres- he combined indie pop and stand-up comedy most famously, but the guy definitely knows what he's doing. Here's one of his songs from Californication:

I have no interest in this whatsoever.
Also, ALW has said that i may be about as musical as the film, which means it may not be a musical.
