I love Angela Lansbury in Mame and I think she will never top anyone else...but, I just recently listened to Julia McKenzie play the role of Mame in a concert version in London that took place in 1996. I think that this comes close to being better than the original with Lansbury (at least for a concert version). For those who have heard it, what are your thoughts? Its a very rare(not so rare anymore) recording and only a few have it (including myself)---it is great to hear a fresh version for once and to hear all the musical transitions and so much more...what a gem!
Thoughts?

A) She's good, but I prefer Angela.
B) It is so totally not rare. A lot of people have this. Rare would be something like a recording of "The Vamp," or a recording of Leland Palmer as Cassie.
Just found the audio. I guess it's not so rare anymore.
Cool! Well I am glad it is not rare as it once was...I was still under the impression it was...great for people to hear this!

The recording is far from rare, and too my knowledge never has been. Several people recorded it back when it was broadcast on the bbc and has been readily available for a long time. That said, I love julia in the role. She is amazing in the part and wish I could have seen her do it live.

The question is: Whatever happened to the recording Ginger Rogers made when she played MAME in London. It was definitely recorded but it was never released.

Is there a recording of Juliet Prowse in the role?
I'd love to hear a later recording of Lansbury. Her singing had improved a lot by the time she recorded Gypsy.

That's what I'd like to know as well. I say Ginger Roger in MAME at Houston Music Theater many, many years ago and loved her. Audrey Christie was Vera.
