I don't know the complete story about Weissler's and Bebe.
But they also burned their bridge with Ute. Which is a shame, because I want to see her Velma so bad.
When Ute was playing it on Broadway, Ute got sick, and to throw it in her face- they brought Bebe in to replace her. So to finish Ute's contract they just threw her out on the tour.
And Ute wasn't a happy camper about the whole thing. Which I can't blame her.

Luba has a great voice.
And Charlotte is Gwen Verdon incarnate.

Yeah! Charlotte really has tackled a lot of Gwen roles.
Lola
Roxie
Charity
Claudine in Can-Can (Encores!)
Although I think out of all the females out there today, Ann is most similar to Gwen. But Charlotte is definitely a success with Gwen roles.

Posted: 8/21/05 at 5:42pmwell as irritating as anne can be she's not half as annoying as henry goodwin on the london recording (he's so not right for billy)

Yeah. Goodwin is alright. I'd take James Naughton over him anyday.
But the true stars of London recording are - Ruthie & Ute. They have the best "My Own Best Friend" on recording - period.

Posted: 8/21/05 at 9:37pmI thought Ute Lemper was perpetually bored when she was in Chicago. She said repeatedly that she'll never do a musical again because she didn't like the repitition. That's why she sticks to concerts and cabaret acts now. I don't see how any of that is the Weissler's fault.

I can't reacall a time when I would call Ann's singing enjoyable.
Just like nails on a chalk board.

Ute won the Oliver for the role, and from what I hear she was just fabulous. The real CHICAGO fanatics on another site - who have seen most Velmas - say Ute was simply one of the best, and without a doubt one of the strongest dancers for Velma.
And the whole drama with the Weissler's is VERY true, they treated her very poorly, what I stated earlier - is all that I remembered from the story, but they did her wrong. Come on now - it's the Weissler's - they aren't exactly known for treating their performers well.
Tuttle - maybe you should listen to these clips http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000003GBD/ref=m_art_li_8/002-3044657-1423250?v=glance&s=music
I wish I could hear the full cast recording.

Anne's voice never bothered me until I listened to her on the Chicago revival CD. I agree with what most here are saying; she is channeling Verdon A LOT.
However, as I listened to the CD more and more...the voice grew on me (NOT like a bad mold, Tuttle..LOL) and I found myself actually enjoying her Nowadays and Roxie numbers more and more.
Overall, her voice seems "scratchy" and it worked for the character or Roxie. I don't see her taking on a singing role that requires a beautiful voice though.

Say what you want Tuttle.
But those clips are from Ann's Tony Nominated performance in GOODTIME CHARLEY. Where she was in full voice.
Do you hate her dancing too?? Tuttle?
re: Ann Reinking's Singing in CHICAGO..#36
Posted: 8/22/05 at 11:05amWhen I saw Ann in both Chicago and Sweet Charity, I felt she was channeling Gwen Verdon. I wanted her to do her own thing.

I've always loved Anne.
I put in my GOODTIME CHARLEY CD yesterday. Anne was in very good voice then, at 20-something.
In CHICAGO...well, I was embarrassed for her. Voice gone to pot, or was it a concious and ill-conceived attempt to sound like post-feather Gwen Verdon?

Posted: 8/22/05 at 11:20amThe Reason She has such a raspy singing voice is becuase when she was younger, apparently she wasn't liked very much by her peers, and one day, she was having something to drink, and someone snuck bleach into it!!!! so her voice was ruined and turned all raspy. but the silver lining is that she learned how to turn her bad voice into a strength and use it to her advantage. Now she has one of the most recognizable voices on broadway.

^ That's what I'm saying.
I never ever heard that.
re: Ann Reinking's Singing in CHICAGO..#41
Posted: 8/22/05 at 11:33amcrazy right? the only reason I know this is becuase my booyfriend has spent the past two summers with her at the broadway theatre progect in florida, and she was giving a master class, and that is what she told everyone.

Wow. That is really.. sad.
She certainly worked around it great in her early years. But I guess the damage is more noticeable now. God, she is so much like Verdon, both of their voices were ruined.
Pippin - was master class just a dancing thing? Did your boyfriend hear her sing at all?
re: Ann Reinking's Singing in CHICAGO..#44
Posted: 8/22/05 at 11:44amI think the master class was singing, but i do know that he has her doing the "roxie number"-monologue and song on tape. I've heard it, and she's still got it!!!
re: Ann Reinking's Singing in CHICAGO..#45
Posted: 8/22/05 at 11:47amOh wow. So would you say she put on a lot of raspiness for the Cast Recording to sound like Gwen?
re: Ann Reinking's Singing in CHICAGO..#46
Posted: 8/22/05 at 11:58amI think that the Gwen thing was only a small part of it. Sure, she would want to emulater her, but I also think that Ann is smart enought to know that she didn't want to be known as a carbon copy of Gwen. I think the raspiness is her character choice ( and a great one). It's sort of like she began where Gwen was, and then went off in her own direction. They do sound alike sometimes, but if you listen carefully there are some subtle differences that make Ann's rendition a totally different interpretation.

Posted: 8/22/05 at 12:18pmAre you sure that stories 100% correct (about the bleach)? She and I share many mutual friends and over the years I have never heard that

re: Ann Reinking's Singing in CHICAGO..#48
Posted: 8/22/05 at 12:33pmYeah, At least that is what she told the apprenctices down At the Broadway theatre project. I just called my boyfriend to make sure I had the story right. He says she says she was in a show with some girl who did not like her, and somehow bleach was slipped into her drink, and she only drank a little, but she says that her voice was never "messed up" till that point.
