I neither have the time nor the energy to go into great detail right now but had you seen the original revival cast of CHICAGO you would know that no one in that cast could be beat. The only other Roxie that I have seen that made me forget how superb Annie was in that show was the chick from Mexico City. I cannot recall her name for the life of me but she was wonderful and I've yet to see a Velma that even comes close to Bebe's.

I have heard the infamous bleach story through the grapevine but never directly from Annie herself. Her singing in CHICAGO was indeed part charchter voice. I kinda equate it to hearing "Private Dancer" by Tina Turner, it's kinda hard no matter how much you try to not let a little Tina slip out vocally when sung. Was she trying to imitate Gwen? No, definitely not but I do think a little Gwen slipped in there often. That raspiness has been in her voice for decades but the older she gets the more pronounced it becomes.

Bianca Marroquin (sp?) is the one you are thinking of and I agree, she was fantastic as Roxie.

What happened with Bebe and the Weisslers is Bebe wanted more money....

And who was talking about Bianca Marroquin....? Cause I totally missed that.

But on a side note I <3 her. What an extremely talented woman she is.... talent oozing out of every pore, I tell ya.

The Velma from MC you're talking about, WonderBoy, is Sandra Guido.

CJR...this is from WonderBoy's post above:

Isn't that Bianca?

Oooh I totally read that in the sense that he was talking about the Velma, since that sentance ran into the sentance about Bebe. lol

Okay, good. Sorry for the tricky wording. Bianca was amazing. I was way shocked when I saw her.

Gwen - feathers wrapped around her vocal chords, and her voice was ruined.

Ann - drank bleach, and her voice was forever raspy.

The similarities are crazy.

This is kid've random - but I wonder how Gwen felt they portrayed herself in ALL THAT JAZZ? I also find it interesting Ann had to go through auditions to play a character based on herself. I'm glad she got Kate for the movie.

Anyone know what year Ann and Tommy Tune performed "Rosie" on The Tony telecast?

It was touring and they showed a clip of it from one of the cities where it was playing at the time. I want to say '90-'92.

edit: 1991. Just found it. If someone has this vhs please pm me. Updated On: 8/22/05 at 11:38 PM

Doesn't someone pour bleach into another girl's drink in the movie "Camp"?

In response to adamgreer's post:
"I found her singing on the Chicago revival recording absolutely unlistenable. Like nails on a chalkboard for me. Every time one of her songs comes up, I reach for that fast forward button immediately.

But that's just me."

No it's not. It's me too.

She was a wonderful dancer and is a good choreographer, but a singer...not to my ears.

I loved her voice. My buddy went with me and she is extremely critical of singers but she liked Ann's voice because she said it went so well with Roxie.

But Penny if you're basing her singing talents on her Roxie. Then you'll be fooled. Check out her eariler stuff.

Gwen was fine with Leland Palmer's role and portrayal in the film ALL THAT JAZZ. Gwen and Leland had been friends for ages too. While the role was of course based on Gwen it is not intended to indeed be Gwen. Fosse made everyone audition for their respective roles in that film. Annie wasn't involved with Fosse romantically when the film came around either which made things a bit hard for her to deal with but was also great in her characterization.

Side note, in case you didn't know Nicole Fosse appears briefly in the film stretching out on the Pepsi machine right before Joe goes into the bathroom to vomit before "Take Off With Us."

Leaving her voice behind...how many surgeries has she gone through?
She looks really scary in the "Fosse" DVD, like she is the spokesperson for botox, or fighting for the lead in the next Mummy movie!

It wasn't bleach, it was "Woolite" and I am using quotation marks because it was in the same bottle, but they used a different label for the bottle.

The incident with Reinking drinking the bleach/cleanser was during the run of the first Sweet Charity revival, during her stint in the title role. In the scene when Charity is hiding in Vitorrio Vidal's closet and takes a swig of beer, somehow the cleaning fluid that was used to clean the bottle between performances hadn't been washed out. She took a swig and ran offstage in agony.

The only CHICAGO recording I can stand is the London cast. I feel that the singing in the OBC as well as revival cast is horrible. Chita's voice on that recording is ok but Gwen's is horrible. I feel about same with the revival, Bebe was ok, not great, and Ann sounds terrible. Whenever I listen to Ann on that recording, I want to pull my hair out. Her voice is very obnoxious (it sounds like she smoked 10 packs that morning) and some of her pronounciations really bother me. The London cast recording isnt the best either but I like it because of the amazing performance by Ute. However, I think that alot of the time Henshall overacts which can get annoying.

I wish they would make some sort of collaboration cd with different casts over time singing different numbers, like the best of the best.

Strange how both Gwen and Ann got screwed up doing 'Sweet Charity.' Wonder if any other performers have had accidents in that role...

Ann's voice was raspy before CHARITY, but I guess the bleach just really did a number on her voice.

I really don't know how anyone can find Gwen's voice on the original terrible. Her monologue is amazing. You have to understand what her voice has gone through at the point. The way she squeaks out the ballad of ME AND MY BABY, is in a way adorable.

And she isn't nearly as raspy as Ann is on her recording.

I love all the Chicago recordings.
