Just watched RACHEL GETTING MARRIED the other night and was blown away by Anne's performance. I remember seeing her in CARNIVAL at City Center a few years ago, and the girl did more than hold her own opposite the likes of Brian Stokes Mitchell and Douglas Sills. While it would seem more obvious to throw her in some ingenue role in a musical, I think she has the chops to hold her own in a straight play on Broadway.
Any thoughts as to what roles she might shine in?
(haters need not reply. Thanks!)

You do know she just did Shakespeare in the Park, right? And more than held her own up there with a cast of Broadway's best. So this isn't really a foreign concept. Love her, and hope she does more theater very soon.
She's one of my favorite actresses...I'd love to see her in more stuff...does anyone know if she has the voice to do a musical?
Wait til you see ALICE.
The footage of her, and the new poster unveiled today, are pretty freaking epic.

She sings quite beautifully, yes.

You have a hint of her singing in the opening number at the Oscars where she sang with Hugh Jackman. Hugh has a movie musical in development about PT Barnum called "The Greatest Showman on Earth" and they are writing the role of Jenny Lind for Anne Hathaway.

I agree, I would love to see her on Broadway, play or musical. She's a wonderful actress and has a beautiful voice.
I wish she was playing Fran in the upcoming Promises, Promises revival. Or Laura in The Glass Menagerie. Or Catherine in A View From the Bridge. There are a lot of roles this season in which she would have been perfect.

I thought she was doing the whole Judy Garland thing, a film then a Broadway show or something along those lines anyway
She has three movies coming out in 2010, plus the Garland biopic, the possible Barnum flick with Jackman, a sequel to Get Smart, and a couple of other projects she's been linked with. Hard to see her fitting in the time and commitment necessary for a show.
I will be unpopular for saying this but...I think Hathaway is better on film. The times I've seen her on stage (and in concerts like the Sondheim tribute at Hollywood Bowl) she doesn't really project the kind of charisma and star power you would really hope she would.
I hope she comes to Broadway eventually, but she would definitely be better in a show like THE GLASS MENAGERIE in a fine supporting role (at this point) than headlining a star driven Broadway musical.
Not a popularity issue, but a comment: in my opinion, not every role requires 'star power'. In fact, some roles require that any 'star power' be checked at the stage door when entering the theater. I didn't get the chance to see her last summer in the park, but by all accounts she checked any ego at the door, and was an actor.
I love Anne Hathaway, she is a great actress. I think she could do very well in a play(or even a musical). I would be very interested to see what she would do with Laura in The Glass Menagerie
MadBrian - I'm not talking ego or glitz. I'm just talking about the ability to carry a show solo. Hathaway isn't ready to do that yet (in my opinion). It was incredibly smart of her to take on Shakespeare in the Park in an ensemble production surrounded by great actors in which she wasn't required to carry the project.
I think she's on the right path approaching theatre that way, as opposed to say, taking on the role of Anne Sullivan in the MIRACLE WORKER that she probably isn't ready to tackle on stage yet.

Im pretty sure she was involved in the workshops for Woman in White for ALW
I first noticed her singing in the 2004 movie Ella Enchanted. She sings "Somebody to Love":

and a little bit of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart":

I missed her in the park, but heard she gave a solid performance. I would actually love to see her as part of a tight ensemble in a really great show, rather than having to carry a show on her own. I'm thinking a'la Katie Holmes in All My Sons. Surround her with seasoned pros to support her and I think she'd be very good. Just can't think of any shows in particular off the top of my head that would make it seem worth her time (meaning, worth it for her to turn down much more money for a film in order to commit six months or so to a play).
