Posted: 7/6/07 at 8:03pmCan somebody explain the crazy love for Anne on this board. I'm just curios because everytime there's a "musical is turned into a movie" thread there are quite a few people who thinks Anne should be in the movie. People have said that she should be everybody from Amneris to Elpheba, which are both utterly ridiculous to me because I heard her sing in Ella Enchanted and she can't pull off either of these characters. Now if she happened to be Millie that might be do able, but not these big voice roles. I will agree that she was good in Devil Wears Prada and Brokeback Mountain, but what else has she done that makes everybody think she can tackle these extremely challenging roles?

She's sung before. Didn't she sing "Kiss me" at a Sondheim benefit a couple years ago?
Plus, I think she's a great actress.
And you consider Amneris "challenging"?

Posted: 7/6/07 at 8:16pmAmneris isn't technically challenging but you still need to have a strong sound and a little soul, Sherie and Idina sang the hell out of "My Strongest Suit" or whatever its called, and I can't really seeing Anne pulling that off especially considering she looks like a sweet innocent 12 year old.

People can look older on film.
I'll see if I can find that Kiss Me video.

God there are some spiteful people on this site. Anne Hathaway has played the lead roles in musicals at The Paper Mill Playhouse, including "Gigi" and "Carnival" for which she was the Rising Star Award nominee. Yes she can sing. She can sing very well.
Check your facts before you spew. This thing is called a computer. Google is a search engine. Use them.

Found it. It isn't Kiss Me, though. She sings What More Do I Need (Saturday Night) and then sings in a medley of Opening Doors (Merrily We Roll Along)

She also won the "Rising Star Award" for playing Winifred in ONCE UPON A MATTRESS, a role that probably requires as much belting as Amneris. She has a beautiful soprano and as proven by that clip, she can certainly sing more than like a "sweet 12 year old."
She's quite a good actress too.

Oh for god sake. I just watched the youtube video. What type of twerp with a tin ear would suggest this woman can't sing? Are you insane? She could lead on Broadway with just her toes exposed from a canvas sack.
Get a life!!!!!

Posted: 7/6/07 at 8:36pmShe really should be playing Johanna in Sweeney Todd (and in my dream cast, with Toni Collette as Mrs. Lovett. ah, well).
#11re: Anne Hathaway Love
Posted: 7/6/07 at 8:36pmYeah- I loved her in Devil Wears Prada. She is a beautiful girl! She said she has had her wild party days but at least she's not in the tabloids all the time. Loved her in Princess Diaries. I just think she has a lot of charisma- you can't help but look at her! Her singing voice is much better than a lot of the "pop" singers who are on the radio.

Posted: 7/6/07 at 8:42pmBut yes, she should be doing a musical. Nine, perhaps? (Yes, I took that from the casting thread, but I'm not that familar with Nine yet.)

Wiz, NINE is a piece of heaven musicalized, listen to it.
I just think she is a bit too young for any of the major roles in NINE, unless she were to play Gloria Morin (as MichaelBennett suggested in the NINE thread), a character that is in the film 8 1/2 but not in the Broadway musical. She'd be ideal in that role if Korpit were to include her in his screenplay for the movie.

I've been listening to Nine. I haven't finished the recording yet, but I love what I'm hearing.
Perhaps Claudia? Or should she be *(for lack of a better term) more of a sex goddess? I can't see her working as Luisa or Carla.
#16re: Anne Hathaway Love
Posted: 7/6/07 at 9:07pmI feel Claudia is not exactly a sex goddess, Claudia is more of an ethereal presence, a goddess indeed but a goddess of the screen. She needs to be mystical, stunning, and unique (who is also a mature woman in my mind). Hathaway could perhaps "pull it off," but ideally they'll cast someone who shows a little more experience, Penelope Cruz is the best suggestion I've heard of so far.

"Now if she happened to be Millie that might be do able, but not these big voice roles."
Not these big voice roles? Then why did you suggest Millie, which is a pretty big voice role (and can also be challenging)?

Anne is a beautiful actress who seems to play the All-American girl role quite well. Of course, she will be a British girl in her next movie, Becoming Jane, but you get the idea. I could picture her as Amneris, but not Elphaba. I actually can't picture her in actual musical at all, but I could picture her in some musical theatre roles - if that makes any sense.
The fact is that almost anyone can be in a movie musical now days because of the editing. So it really doesn't matter if you can truly sing. However, I guess that goes for any type of music now days. That is why I love musical theatre. Because if you can't sing, there is no way that you are going to make it with 8 shows a week.
