Another Tony Nomination for Patti LuPone?

Okay. The show hasn't opened yet. There are still more shows to open this season. BUT...

Those who have seen Patti LuPone thus far in Sweeney Todd, do you think that her performance was Tony worthy? I have tickets for November 1st, so I haven't seen the show, but I was just curious. It's a pretty big deal that she has returned in a Broadway show after so many years, and by the sound of things, people seem pretty impressed with what she has done with the role. So does anyone feel strongly that Patti will get a Tony Nomination?

I'm certain that Patti will be nominated. She might even win, though she will have some pretty stiff competition from Maria Friedman and LaChanze.

I agree a nomination is certain, she is LaLupone playing Lovett it was probably certain when she jotted her name on the contract.
That said she is really great, I saw the show again last night and really feel that she nails it, even when she slurs out a line or two, she has the full attention of the audience as well as a deliciously nasty interpretation of the character.
I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

Go Patti!
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

I've VERY excited to see Patti in this show. I've listened to her on CDs and seen her on video, but I've been yearning to see her for a few years now and I can finally have my chance!

Me and my friend at college put Lost Treasure in all the time to watch her as Reno and Evita whenever we are bored because she is just fantastic to watch!

Patti will definitely be nominated and has a very good chance of winning. Her main competition is Maria Friedman (The Woman in White) and LaChanze (The Color Purple). The other two slots are wild cards. My money is on whomever plays Babe (Kate Baldwin, if you believe ATC) and Laura Benanti (The Wedding Singer).

Definately receiving a nom. But I'm sure LaChanze will prove to be stiff competition.

I predict that the two neck and necks this year will be LaChanze for The Color Purple and LuPone for Sweeney Todd. I think it will be a race to the finish but in the end, LaChanze will take it. She will be incredible in The Color Purple.

re: Another Tony Nomination for Patti LuPone?

Definately a nom. Probably will win, just because she's Lupone, and because it's Sondheim. Unless LaChanze breaks her ankle, which will probably tip it in her favour...

re: Another Tony Nomination for Patti LuPone?

I think LuPone will be a sentimental favorite -- IF she behaves herself offstage. She's a Broadway legend -- and like Bernadette Peters, Chita Rivera and Angela Lansbury before her, she probably deserves a second Tony, and her performance in SWEENEY is fantastic.

La Chanze's chances will depend on the reception to THE COLOR PURPLE. Its a tremendous role, but like LuPone, she has in the past been difficult offstage. I don't think anyone in the industry feels she's overdue.

re: Another Tony Nomination for Patti LuPone?

Are you saying that LuPone's Tony is overdue??
Because I highly disagree. She won for Evita and not only won but also got herself a place in musical theater history as one of the greatest performers to ever grace the stage. I would hardly say she has an overdue Tony. She may have won some 20 years ago (roughly) but her legacy for playing that role will live and thrive for quite some time to come.

LaChanze is just the kind of fresh, new, talented performer that the Tonys have been looking to give an award to probably since Sutton Foster's performance in Millie. The Tonys have begun to tend to favor the younger performers (Clark is an exception as her performance was incredible on every level) and I think LaChanze is the type of triple-threat performer that Broadway has been searching for. I haven't anticipated a single performance so much in a long while.

It is almost a given that she will get a nomination. I also think that Judy Kaye will also be in the running for Souvenir.

LaChanze isn't new. She got her nom for Once on this Island in 1991, I believe. It's going to be a stiff year for Leading Actress. I'm excited.

LaChanze, Color Purple
Laura Benanti, Wedding Singer
Patti LuPone, Sweeney Todd
Maria Friedman, Woman in White
Carolee Carmello, Lestat

What a year for the ladies!

re: Another Tony Nomination for Patti LuPone?

Honey, LaChanze is hardly a new fresh face to Broadway -- she's been around doing shows for almost 20 years....

I don't think LuPone is "overdue" per se, but she is considered a legend within the industry, and a lot of people feel like she's been overlooked in the musical department losing a lot of roles she probably should have played -- ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, GYPSY, etc. They may want to reward her "long awaited" return to a Broadway musical.

It's way too early to tell anything. Reviews will tell a lot.

P.S. SOUVENIER is going to be campaigned as "Best Play" -- so Judy Kaye would be up for Best Actress in a Play (a la MASTER CLASS)

"Are you saying that LuPone's Tony is overdue??"
Rocks, I think, and please correct me if I am wrong, you have confused "overdue" and "overratted." A Tony that is overdue, is one that a performer deserved for a long time without actually winning it.

MB is saying that LaChance's Tony chances are not improved by her being "overdue" meaning, she has not been around forever and been loved, yet never won.

I am so excited for the female performances, I love Lovett, yet these other roles are also very strong, I can not wait.

re: Another Tony Nomination for Patti LuPone?

Yes, LaChanze isnt new or fresh. Those weren't the right words. It's just that she's much less known in comparrison to LuPone, I guess. And she hasn't done many shows on Broadway in which she played a big role.

re: Another Tony Nomination for Patti LuPone?

I thought someone said Carmello's part in Lestat is more of a supporting role, and that that's where she would be considered. I do agree though, P_O -- it would be lovely for her to get nominated again.

re: Another Tony Nomination for Patti LuPone?

I think you're all overlooking the fact that when IN MY LIFE opens there will be a atir of excitement which rivals only that which THE PRODUCERS aroused several years ago. I predict a clean sweep of Tony Awards for IN MY LIFE--including Jessica B as "Best Actress/Musical"

re: Another Tony Nomination for Patti LuPone?

I don't really know who LaChanze is, or who the other people you guys were talking about are. You all must know my opions of Patti Lupone by now. Me repeating myself would just be annoying.

re: Another Tony Nomination for Patti LuPone?

Patti will win Best Actress. I don't think she deserves it. I thought Friedman was much better in "Woman in White" and I HATED "Woman in White" lol.

"Sweeney Todd" is gonna sweep this year.
