I saw it yesterday. I found too much of the play to be disturbingly similar to Albee's "The Goat". It's a funny play but flawed due to way too many plot twists. The cast is uniformly top-notch and it's very well staged and directed.
P.S. Your friend Dawn is a fantastic actress. I hope we'll see more of her on LA stages...

Posted: 4/13/05 at 2:45amI LOVED LOVED LOVED this play!!! Though the L.A. Times and Broadway Baby compared it to The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia, I found only the slightest similarities. It is about a very socially liberal couple who find their views sorely tested when two of their adopted children make an announcement... The laughs are truly non-stop, the performances uniformly sensational. It's very provocative. I was glad that Greenberg (Take Me Out) gave something for his gay fans to enjoy, but that's just one aspect to a yes very full-of-surprises plot. Though definitely R rated due to language and subject matter, the older Orange County audience members seemed to be laughing as much as anyone else. Stars John de Lancie and Linda Gehringer are perfection, Mary Joy very funny in the smallest role, Ann Guilbert of the Dick Van Dyke Show still alive and kicking as a very feisty and foul-mouthed septegenarian, and Popular's friend Dawn-Lyen Gardner shining as Juliet. For those into talented male eye-candy, there are the Terrence Riordan and James Yaegashi, both adorable and funny as two very different brothers. Riordan and Yaegashi have both appeared in Take Me Out. Unfortunately, neither they nor anyone else was naked in A Naked Girl on the Appian Way. Despite this, I give the play an "A" and highly recommend it to anyone who can make the drive to Costa Mesa. I got a 1/2 price ticket through Gold Star events, row K, and moved down to C after intermission. (Luckily the second act is much longer than the first!)

Yes, I saw the list. Not crazy about the selection. I'll add the two 2005 plays to my list. Thanks for the reminder. Judging from tonight's performance, South Coast Rep does great work (gorgeous set, I forgot to mention), though, and their next play is Arthur Miller's A View From the Bridge. Miller is my favorite playwright and I've never seen that one, so it's definitely on my list for June.

Posted: 4/13/05 at 3:39amSCR will do a phenomenal job with "A View from the Bridge". Their production of Miller's tragic masterpiece "All my Sons" was sheer perfection.

Posted: 4/13/05 at 3:43amI wish I'd seen that. All My Sons is my favorite drama, and one play I will definitely want to see at the Geffen (but not as a subscriber).

Posted: 4/13/05 at 6:59pmDoes Goldstar Event usually offer a half price for SCR shows? If not, SCR has a general rush. If you go during the weekday, you can definitely get the rush tix. Even on the weekend, I'm sure they won't sell out so you could get the general rush. I will be in Orange County in June so hopefully I can see the show at SCR.

Posted: 4/13/05 at 8:51pmI could save even more by getting rush tickets, I suppose, but I like to have my ticket confirmation in hand, so that's why I go with Gold Star or LA Stage Tix.

Slightly different impression here. While I admit I chuckled off-and-on through the piece, as a whole it never really came together for me. As in Take Me Out, I found Mr. Greenberg's writing scintilating to the ear, but not necessarily connected to the characters on stage. This was especially glaring in the role of the supposedly somewhat less-than-intelligent adopted son who could none-the-less play word-games with everyone else. Rather 'sitcomy' in its presentation, and relying a little too much on the supposed shock of vulgarity and titilating subject matter.
The cast was pretty much on top of things, but without much meat to base any real characterizations on. They were all excellent at playing 'type', but they never became real people to me at all.
The set was gorgeous, as was our Ms. Popular's friend
