Another trip recommendation thread

I know - another one of these posts. I’m a long-time lurker and only post when I’m planning my not-frequent-enough Broadway trips. You always come through with the best recommendations. I’m so glad I caught Downstate at Playwrights last time, it was an incredible theatre experience.

I’ll be in town January 4-8 with enough time for 6 shows (not really interested in any of the Thursday matinee options, sadly). I’m a recent college grad so I’m going to rely heavily on rush and lotteries which seems easier this time of year. I try to prioritize shows that I won’t likely get a chance to see in Toronto or on my next trip.


My locked choices are:

• Shucked

• Purlie Victorious

• Hell’s Kitchen

Up in the air:

• Merrily: would love to see it but seems unrealistic that I’ll win the lotto

• How to Dance in Ohio: I’d really like to give this a chance

• Appropriate: I just saw an excellent production of this in Toronto

• Here We Are: I know very little about this show but it seems up my alley

To get a better sense of what I like, I loved A Strange Loop, Kimberly Akimbo and LSOH on my last trip. Not really huge on jukebox musicals but loved Ain’t Too Proud. Just saw Jagged Little Pill and it’s tied with Girl From The North Country for being my least favourite show. I tend to enjoy dramatic plays most. I also love diving into New York’s theatre scene beyond Broadway more and more with each trip.

All that to say, any of your recommendations are greatly appreciated!

My daughter, also a recent college graduate, is planning a New York City trip later in January.

As for Here We Are, which I saw in October, it seems like there are a lot of cheap tickets available through TodayTix, as inception notes. I can’t guarantee you will love the show, although I really liked it, but I recommend it for a theater lover like you. The production is first-rate, from the direction to the set design to the acting. It’s kind of a special evening (or afternoon), and it’s not a show that can be replicated elsewhere.

Merrily We Roll Along is a terrific revival, but it’s pricey unless you win the lottery. (My daughter is probably going to spring for a ticket, but it does stretch the budget.) I agree that Sweeney Todd is worth a try if you can get a rush ticket. People, including me, can debate the merits of the revival - but it is a well- sung, entertaining musical with a full orchestra.

I haven’t seen any of the other shows that still will be playing with the exception of Kimberly Akimbo (a Tony winner with glowing reviews that I didn’t care for personally; that said, mine is a minority view) and Little Shop of Horrors, which you have already seen.
