Speaking of Chekhov: If you bring them Cate Blanchett, they will come.
Hurricane Irene doesnt deter audience from Uncle Vanya at Kennedy Center
yes, you're right. Kate Mailer, the memory of the coincidence of two fledgling actress daughters of literary giants appearing in the same play made me gild the lily by falsely recalling them having the same name.
Surprised none of the other oldsters on here have mentioned Andrei Serban's spectacular production of The Cherry Orchard at the Beaumont in 1976 or '77. People remember Meryl Streep in a minor part but the real stars of the evening were Irene Worth and Set and Costume Designer Santo Loquasto. When that perfect oval-shaped ballroom pavilion slowly sailed upstage at the end of Act III and its 100 candle sconces were doused one by one, everyone in the audience knew exactly what the end of a way of life feels like. Combining physical comedy and a dream-like vision for the play to live within was an inspired choice for director Serban, and all successive Chekhov productions have inevitably paled in comparison. A perfect night of theater.
