I know that. It's cool.
I'm just very curious about who they're pursuing for this role...is he a Broadway, TV, or film actor?

Meloni can get all feral with me anytime!

Posted: 10/27/05 at 1:43pmI nominate DeNiro for the role. Who cares if he's 30 years too old, right dogs?

Posted: 10/27/05 at 1:44pmBut in all seriously, I would love to see Robert Downey Jr. try the role.

I don't think Bill Irwin looks THAT much older than Brian...
I don't know--he'd have to be a bad-as* with Eileen up there...how about Dominic West? I think Krause would be a fine choice too.

Has Bill Pullman shown himself to be more interesting than I think of him? He makes me yawwwwwwn.
I also thought Robert Downey Jr., but he brings a lot of baggage; I don't see him in the role.
I seriously question Peter Krause. I've seen him twice on stage: T.V. actor, all the way.
I believe that part of what makes Meloni so compelling is the amibiguity--he can seem so sincere and charming and yet so incredibly sensual. He had Chita fooled on "Oz", and Chita's been around the block.
I don't think he really projects a sinister air; I think we all (gay, straight, men, women) just project our sinister desires onto him. And I think he absolutely has the ability to put an audience right where he wants them.

OK, a few things.
Just thought I'd point out that Eileen Atkins is 20 years older than Cherry Jones, relevant or not.
I recommend Ben Chaplin (Tony nominee for The Retreat from Moscow) as the next Father Flynn. He would be brilliant.

Posted: 10/28/05 at 10:31amNot relevant in the least. Cherry Jones was 3rd or 4th choice to play the role and is actually a lot younger than the character is supposed to be. Clearly, it doesn't matter if the sister is played by an older actress or by someone of Cherry's age. But I think age is a very important factor for the role of Father Flynn.

Posted: 10/28/05 at 4:06pmPop is right...age is not a factor for Aloysius (65 year old Elizabeth Franz was the first choice, after all), but Father Flynn is all about youth.

Posted: 10/28/05 at 4:13pmWell, he does coach basketball, so he should be at least young and in-shape enough to PLAY it...this might be an odd choice, but what about Steve Zahn? I think getting an actor who has a reputation for comedy would be an interesting choice. Like Irwin for The Goat and Virginia Woolf...

Posted: 10/29/05 at 3:13amSueleen, You may be right about Rip Taylor being the only viable choice to replace Brian O'Byrne. Mr. Taylor is one of those rare actors with such range and versatility, he could truly play any part in any show in any theatre on Broadway, the West End or New Hope, Pennsylvania. I am soooo disappointed I missed his Jean Valjean. Perhaps he would close the alleged "age gap" that so many feel exists between Harry Connick Jr and Kelli O'Hara in the forthcoming Pajama Game. Rip's Babe would be in neither the Janis Paige nor Doris Day mold; he'd make the role his own. He may even help Harry appear less dull.
