Who can replace Father Flynn and do as good a job as O' Byrne did. Also, who can they find to go toe to toe with Eileen Atkins?

Posted: 10/26/05 at 6:01pmIt would be kind of awesome to see Bill Irwin do the role.

Posted: 10/26/05 at 6:05pmIrwin is 55, and the script says that Flynn should be in his late 30s.

I didn't actually think about it, I just think it would be cool.
Regardless, on stage I don't think that Irwin looks much older than O'Byrne at all.

Posted: 10/26/05 at 6:11pmBill Irwin would be interesting. Someone mentioned Peter Krause, and I think that would be great. Also, I've heard that Justin Theroux is one hell of a stage actor.

Posted: 10/26/05 at 6:44pmI heard Robert Sean Leonard is being sought, if his filming for HOUSE is finished on time.

Posted: 10/26/05 at 7:30pmRobert Sean Leonard is great, but his eternally boyish quality really isn't right for Father Flynn...I do enjoy him on "House" though.

Posted: 10/26/05 at 7:41pmHow about Billy Crudup, who just got a lot of momentum from "The Pillowman?" He can be both charming and unreadable.

Posted: 10/26/05 at 7:47pmI adore RSL, but I'm not so sure this would be the best role for him. Though I'm certainly not complaining. I'd see him in anything. The same goes for Crudup (though I think he's committed to a couple of movies right now, so I'm not so sure that'd work out). And I think Krause could do a decent job as well. Sure, he was terrible in AtF, but I'd like to see him get another shot on stage.

Posted: 10/27/05 at 6:26amPeter Krause is a superb actor. He was just miscast in After the Fall. The role of Father Flynn is PERFECT for him.

Posted: 10/27/05 at 7:05amOooh oooh Chris Meloni! I'd be there all the time.

I'm not sure if Robert Sean Leonard is exactly right for the role, but I'd go see what he would do with it anyway.
I doubt (no pun intended, really) they'll cast Peter Krause because as well as getting dreadful reviews in After the Fall, the play wasn't much of a commercial hit, either.

A couple of things to keep in mind:
The priest should not skew as innocent or guilty from the very first minute you see him. In fact, Brian O'Byrne has commented that due to the the scandals in the Catholic Church, an audience in 2005 is apt to think the priest is guilty from the second he walks on stage, if they know anything as to what the play is about. So he has to work harder in those early scenes to make you think Father Flynn is a decent fellow.
Now Chris Meloni is a sexy guy, but he has a feral, somewhat sinister look. He'd walk out on stage and I think you'd have no doubt in your mind that he's molesting anything that moves.
O'Byrne has also commented that he will play some things differently, if he senses the audience is too much on the side of Sister Aloysius, or too much on the side of Father Flynn.
Based on After the Fall, I'm not certain that Peter Krause has the stage chops to manipulate an audience.
The part requires a guy that is an everyday type, someone whom you like and trust, and someone with enough stage experience to interpret how an audience is responding.
