Is it just me or are all the plays nowadays revivals or based on something else. Are there any new ideas out there? And this also goes for movies, no new ideas. Could this be a short time thing, or is it going to become the downfall of musicals.

It doesn't matter if the material is based on another source or if it's original, it only matters if it's good or not. Plenty of well-regarded musicals have been based on other sources.

even back in the golden age, a number of shows were also based on preexisting material. shows like Oklahoma!, South Pacific, Carousel, My Fair Lady, West Side Story.

as Kringas said, it only matters if the show is good, not what if it is original.

It can be traced back forever. Even aspects of Shakespeare's material is based on pre-existing Greek mythology and other oral tradition type tales.

I agree with you about the movies, I mean The wedding singer, of all movies to make a musical out of does it really have to be an Adam Sandler movie, sorry to the wedding singer fans but REALLY! But i don't care about musicals from books, its just the musicals from movies and the ....GASP j-j-j-ukebox.

It does seem to be happening to movies more, but I belive that what is hnappening in the musicals could be a beggining to absolutly no originals, I'm not saying that all things can't be traced back, but we need diffrences still.

It's like television today. All the old sitcoms of yesteryear are pretty much the same plot and now network execs have to pull out reality shows to fill in timeslots.

ALL musicals are based on something. It doesn't have to be movies, popular music, or books.

Nope, not just you. It's sad that there's hardly anything original. Anywhere! Not just Broadway. The world needs new writers.

Thank you for finally posting an intelligent topic for a thread. This is more like it.

And to respond to your question, I totally agree. I really don't see much original material coming to theatre lately...it seems like movies that were never meant to musicals are being regurgitated onto the stage. What I find even more interesting is that most of these shows are then being put back onto film as musicals....(i.e. Hairspray, The Producers, etc.)

I know a lot of people get really angry that Broadway is moving towards a more "poppy" sound, and I have to admit that I really do miss old broadway, but I think you have to take into account that it may just be the way the theatre is evolving now. Everything goes through changes. And hey, this may just be a short phase that could fade out easily. With shows like Drowsy Chaperone becoming so successful, I think we may be turning in a different direction.

But any direction that it ends up going in, whether I like it or not, I'm just glad that Broadway is still alive and thriving, and has been reinvigorated. It may be changed, but at least it's not like a few years ago, when it was nearly dead. I'm glad that the younger generation is learning to appreciate it, as annoying as they can be. Because that means a whole new generation of people who will further advance the world of theatre.
