This is so beautiful. I always hear Into The Woods in all his stuff. Passion is such a fascinating show-I am so blown away. Was this guy in Titanic? I recognize his voice so much from something a few years back. Sorry for my lack of knowledge. :)
You really should pick up the DVD. I didn't see the original, but some who did say it was not as intimate as the DVD, because they were on stage. The taped performance is on a soundstage, and the camera is right up there. It really benefits from being on screen.
The DVD is definitely worth buying. The close-ups are breathtaking.
Yes, Merrydothe, Michael Cerveris was in "Titanic." He played Thomas Andrews.

CRAP, I had to work and I just got home and I also forgot about it. Is it going to air again?

This was a great production. Patti was great but different than Donna of course. It's hard for me to say which one I prefered. Audra is of course my goddess and I think she and Marin are both on equal footing. Oddly enough I prefer Jere Shea. IT's weird, when I first say the vieo years ago, I was disappointed a little by Shea. But now I prefer him. I think he had more of an arc to his performance and for some reason Michael seemed the slightest bit gay all the time. However I must state for my sake and anyone else making the comparisons. The Donna Murphey video was taped in the 2 days following the closing night. The show ran several months and they not only had the convienance of a long run to hone their characters, but also a 4 week rehearsal period and a 3 week workshop. So I think considering the short rehearsal period and lack of runs, this cast did an amazing job
3am? Ouch!!!! How long is it? and thank you my fellow Carolinian
I am going to have to wait until Saturday at 4 am to watch it. That is unless I can somehow get a master copy from the local PBS that is run at our college. Maybe I'll sneak in and steal it.

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!! You guys are killing me!!!! I absolutely adore Micahel Cerveris, and I'm not seeing this till tomorrow. I'm stunned though!!! How can you peple NOT find Michael Cerveris sexy??!!! I think he is one of the sexiest men on Broadway. His talent... He is so unbelievably talented. Ahhhhh...I can't wait to see this tomorrow night...
So, anyone care to tell me more about the beginning scene!!!
Anyone on the East Coast, just letting you know that PBS will re-air "Passion" on Sunday April 3rd @ 4am. Just in case you missed it, or are completely obsessed that you will stay up to watch it again that late...either way is fine.
OH Chrys, I find him sexy. Trust and believe. Just some parts of him were a wee troubling. But as is the case with every guy I am infatuated with, I can gleefully overlook a flaw to enjoy the bigger picture. Oh and no nudity in the opening scene, but still very steamy nevertheless. Lingerie, undergarments, and such.

*faints* I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!
The first showing done, 2nd one (in Buffalo area including Toronto and most of southern Ontario) coming up at 2:30 am. Fresh tape in VCR ready to go.
I agree with everyone here...Patti was amazing although the part is still owned by Donna Murphy. Patti played it bigger and stronger. I also saw Judy Kuhn do it at Kennedy Center and she actually made Fosca more introspective. The KC production was first rate on every level and it was good to see Michael Cerveris again tonight. The real amazing performance was Audra (well, is anyone surprised?) More than any of her predecessors (Marin Mazzie, Rebecca Luker) she really made something of the role. And its not that the other ladies didn't, but with Audra it really caught fire.
The score is so rich and yet tightly woven, probably more than any other Broadway score.
Although PASSION won the Tony award it had the shortest run of any Tony winning musical. It's a not a show that tourists will flock to (awards or not) - No, they all much preferred BEAUTY AND THE BEAST which one just ONE award for costumes. Yet it is still running 11 years later.
But PASSION remains for me a very special show, and one I listen to and enjoy watching many times over.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

The first time I saw Passion, I didn't think I was going to like it. Sure enough, when I watched it, I found myself getting so sucked in by the music. I love how Sondheim sets everything up in the very first song with the line "How quickly pitty leads to love." The second I heard that I was like, "Oh, okay. I guess we know how this story is gonna end." I think it's brilliant. And the music is just amazing.
I can't even FIND pbs here. It's channel 13 upstate, which is the same as NYC, basically. I went through all the channels and it's NO WHERE. So confused.

Having seen both the original production and the Kennedy Center production several times, I found Lonny Price's take on it interesting but very disappointing. Perhaps it was the concert restrictions that made his version so flat. But if he has staged this twice now with these three stars, how could he let them each perform as if they were in different shows? Lupone is doing Fosca from the original movie, Audra--truly lovely--is taking a rather contemporary approach and Ceveris is recreating his excellent KC turn except he isn't playing opposite Kuhn and Luker any longer. Eric Schaeffer's acclaimed Signature and KC productions put Giorgio rightfully at the center of the piece. Ceveris was excellent live. And Kuhn and especially Luker were revelations in their roles. The women were very different than their Broadway predecessors and from Lupone and MacDonald. Luker's slightly chilly Clara was every bit as manipulative as Fosca. I see what Lupone what trying to do as Fosca but I found her bold performance much less effective than the detailed and varied Kuhn(the most sympathetic Fosca I've seen) or the brilliant Murphy. It made Fosca seem like a smaller role as well. Since she was playing at one level, you could watch Ceveris who had a lot more going on in his work. I was really looking forward to her Fosca partly because she gave a wonderfully powerful yet very nuanced performance in the title role in REGINA at the Kennedy Center less than a month ago. Price staged things smoothly and I enjoyed Richard Easton and Kate Baldwin very much and there was nice work from Alexander Gemignani and James Clow in the chorus.

I love "Passion"...it's one of my favorites. I caught the last part of the show last night and thought it was excellent. Though I have to say Michael Cerveris physically reminded me just a little bit of Mike Myers in "Austin Powers"...think it might have been the costuming (don't shoot me Michael fans - I like him as well).
Govenor...with regards to your comment about not feeling the moment when Giorgio realized he was in love with Fosca...in the West End Production Sondheim actually added a bit during Giorgio's conversation with the Doctor which addresses his change of feelings towards Fosca. If you check out the LCR you can hear Michael Ball's haunting "I Love Fosca".
I love the "I Love Fosca" moment on the London CD. I really wish it had be reinstated in the score because it is one of the most gorgeous moments in the show.
The "I Love Fosca" moment is included as an extra on the DVD of "Passion". It was cut in previews.
The DVD commentary alone is worth owning that DVD.
I, sadly, missed this broadcast (but not for bad reasons...I was at the Doubt opening).
Does anyone know if its going to be rebroadcast any time soon?

I agree. The DVD is absolutely amazing.
