Posted: 3/4/10 at 4:09amI've never been to an Encores! production before, so I'm a little confused about one thing. When I tried to select a certain price range/seat section, most of them (and all Orchestra seats) are marked Unavailable. Is this because they are sold out of those particular tickets or do they usually hold some to release at a later date? And is it wise to buy now or are there always discount codes for these productions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried to get tickets online to the Sunday evening performance of FANNY well in advance and encountered the same thing, pretty much for every level in the theater. I went to the box-office the day before the performance and walked away with two 7th row orchestra dead-center seats.
I'm sure ANYONE CAN WHISTLE is going to be much more popular than FANNY, but I'd still try the box-office if you can. They are probably holding on to blocks of seats.

Three years ago I tried to get my partner a last minute seat to the very-sold out "Follies." He got in, but sat in the far right corner of the house. I imagine "Whistle" will be a very similar situation, especially with Murphy and Foster on board. Throw in a big name Hapgood and it'll be sold out by the end of March.
However, I do agree: box office is the way to go.

Thank you both for the helpful responses. Since I live in Las Vegas I don't get the chance to actually go to the box office that often. I think I'll try calling it though, instead of using the website. Thanks again!
ETA: One last question: as I've never been to City Center before I'm not sure what the theater is like. Is it a small enough house so that most seats are pretty decent? Or should I avoid certain areas?

I consider it one of the most cavernous houses of New York...avoid the balcony unless you want to feel as though youre watching the musical from a hilltop.
Orchestra and front/rear-front mazz are generally very good seats.
Hope this helps!

Posted: 3/4/10 at 10:22pmThe front balcony is generally ok, but anything past the front row of the rear gallery isn't exactly optimal seating. Of all the seats I've had, the best were definitely the grand tier.

BWAHAHAHAHA! It's nearly twice as big as the Hilton. It's a barn.
I'll second givesmevoice: Anywhere in the mezzanine besides the front row is an awful seat. I'd go with the gallery over rear mezz.

I don't know how they sync their website with their walk-up sales, but I've always had problems with the City Center website.
Last year when I wanted tickets to the Kristin Chenoweth benefit with the ridiculous online fees, I went to the website with specific seats in mind that I saw on the website. The man at the box office said everything was sold out and that they weren't available. I pulled up the City Center website on my phone, showed him the tickets were there, and he still wouldn't give them to me! Then as I was waiting off to the side using the Internet on my phone, this other woman came up and bought tickets that were supposedly sold out.
That being said, I've sat in the rear mezzanine for Fanny and Finian's Rainbow. As long as you're a little taller it's fine.

Posted: 3/5/10 at 10:30amI don't think there's a theater in the world with worse seating than City Center. As others said, if you're under 6'5" and actually want to be able to see the stage, stick with the first 5 rows of the mezz or the front of the gallery.

Thanks much for the seating advice, guys. I have another question about availability. I called and talked to a very nice lady at the box office who told me the reason so many tickets are shown as Unavailable is because those seats are being held for Subscribers. She told me that they aren't sold out, but they are for those people with the same seat each show. Apparently more become available if/when the people do exchanges.
My question to you all is how often this happens. The woman was unable to tell me anything regarding subscribers exchanging, since she said nothing is guaranteed. As I've never dealt with City Center before, I'm kind of not sure how this works. Is there are a certain date when those tickets suddenly become released to the general public? Do the potential subscribers have to claim their tickets or are those seats just assumed to be filled right up until the show date? And most importantly, if all I see now is Mid-Mezzanine and Front Gallery, should I take one of those or is it better to wait (either for a discount or for a better section)?
Once again, thank you.

First of all City Center is a barn of a theater. Orchestra is on the small side with most of the seats in the mid mezzanine, rear mezzanine and the gallery. The Grand Tier offer great seats as long as they are not on the extreme sides. Since the orchestra is on the small size you can't go wrong there although I never sat on the extreme sides in that section or in the back.
As for getting seats. Wait. They always release seats the week of the performance. I have never not been able to get seats to Encores. Even the most popular shows such as Follies there were seats available. Online and the box office are connected so if you can not get to the box office buy them online. The seats offered are always Grand Tier, Orchestra and Orchestra pit. For Encores I have never sat in any other section and always purchase them the week of the performances..

Posted: 3/6/10 at 7:20pmWhat is the view like for the 'extreme sides' of the Grand Tier?
Anyone Can Whistle tickets#12
Posted: 3/6/10 at 7:23pmObstructed. You will miss what is going on on the side you are sitting on. Mostly entrance and exits depending on the staging.

Mmm. They are described as "Par Vu".
If I can get better seats closer to the date [I can only attend the first performance] I'd shell out again (since I am coming all the way from Australia $100 is negligible).
But does the Grand Tier (specifically the sides though) feel 'close' to the stage?
Anyone Can Whistle tickets#14
Posted: 3/6/10 at 7:34pmGrand Tier section is close to the stage. There are only five rows in this section. There is a walkway/aisle between Grand Tier and Mid mezzzzanine. I guess I should have said "partial view" versus "obstructed". If you have seats that are sold as partial view which are in the extreme side sections of the Grand Tier than you will miss the entrances and exits on the side you are sitting. Most of the action for Encores is played down stage since the orchestra is on stage and take up all of the back of the stage.

The grand tier is really nice...I sat in the 2nd or 3rd row for Gypsy and the view was excellent.
That said, I can't really ever afford that so I generally go with rear mezz...I was in the front row for both Fanny and Gypsy and while it's not ideal the first row isn't that bad. I got a front row rear mezz seat for Fanny at the box office a couple of hours before the performance though I don't know if that'd be possible for Anyone Can Whistle.
I should mention that I'm 5'6" and don't have any trouble seeing from the rear mezz. :)

Posted: 3/7/10 at 1:11amThe front row of the rear mezz is GREAT for leg room, though.
