DW just called from show --
Wow, he does a cover of "Maria" ? Must be interesting --
Anyone know if that is usually in his set?

Posted: 5/9/07 at 9:34pmIt's nice. From what I remember, it was a simple jazzy arrangement, with Adam on the shaker and accompanied by Larry, his pianist.

Adam's on bass for Maria.
He was awesome tonight; he was in fine voice as always -- totally powerful, and just a pleasure to see up on stage. He changed up the set order a little bit. There was one brand new song that he's never performed before (it doesn't even have a name yet) and one newish song that I know he did on the last leg of the tour at least once.

Wife said he was excellent, but that he got annoyed at one point because some people started asking him questions.... he responding by saying that "this isnt a talkback" (or something like that)
She couldnt tell if he was serious or not, but said he looked a bit annoyed.

He's been getting increasingly snarky on stage over the years, but I tend to think it's all in good humor. He knows exactly what buttons to push with his audiences, especially the young fans. Tonight there were a lot of teenagers up in front, talking to him and finishing his jokes (since he has the same ones all the time), and he said something like "this is not an interactive show!" -- but of course, he went right back to talking to them.
I mean, it's all in good fun, but when they don't shut up and start interrupting, I can certainly see it being a bit annoying.
Don't feed the beast, Adam!

Posted: 5/10/07 at 12:05amI agree with Em. It's a fine line. I think he does get annoyed at points, but then also soaks it up at others. I'm sure it must get tiring when the girls constantly shout out the same things someone else did at a previous show, just because they know it will get a reaction. The shout outs were a tad overboard tonight more than usual.

I thought he was pretty good, though I must that by the way he acted towards some of the crazy fans, he's going to DIE when he goes back to RENT - plus he really does look too old to play Roger.
But I thought he was very good, he was really funny and his rendition of glory was pretty good minus the random riffs he added to it. I also loved Book of Endings, but that's one of my favorite songs of his so of course I did.

I think by the point he probably understands the fan situation so well that he expects certain behavior.
I liked the new songs that he played tonight, now I really want to hear the new album. It was funny when he said West Side Story sucks right before he sang Maria

haha yeah, i was definitely wondering about that.
And I know he was joking (and even if he wasnt he kind of had to say it) but you could tell he was frusterated with all the "OMgZ AdUm PaSkEl I LoVe YoU"s that he was receiving. And knowing that half the people there were only there because they loved him in RENT. I genuinely like his solo music though, and I saw him in Aida before I even knew who he was and loved him.

Posted: 5/10/07 at 1:59amSee, but he can't have it both ways; he can't be frustrated with it AND encourage it at the same time, or else the result is bunch of teenaged fans who are acting like the kind of five-year-olds that do something simply because you tell them not to.

Emcee, thats exactly what they do and how they act. you are right
I wonder if he does ever really get frustrated with the demographic of his fans. I mean I know he appreciates their loyalty, but maybe he'd like to branch out a little bit. Someone I met tonight said she doesnt even like his albums, she just goes to the shows because she likes him.
I wonder how his CD sales were, and if he reached a different audience at all

I've heard a lot of people say things like that, and I doubt it's any secret that a lot of people are there just to see the original Roger. I mean, I guess it's cool that people are supporting him even if they're not into his music, but at the same time, I think he'd so much more appreciate the fanbase if they liked him for what he really loves to do than if they were just like "ZOMG ROGER."
The age demographic at last night's show was kind of a surprise to me, to be honest -- there weren't nearly as many young fans as I'd have expected, and it was just generally pretty spread out. I dunno, though, I've been seeing Adam perform on a pretty regular basis since I was 13 (I'm 21 now), and I never acted the way some of those kids do. Yikes.

Yeah, I have to admit I was a little annoyed by the audience. Personally, I would have liked to have heard why he hates West Side Story and still sings Maria instead of having him cut the story short because someone from the audience had "stolen his shtick" right before he started talking about it.
I was also waiting outside for a bit hoping to talk to him for a second... but, left when the crowd actually started chanting his name.
I wasn't really familiar with his solo music before the show and definitely liked a bunch of it. I really liked the unexpected/different versions of some Broadway songs... fun show.

Yeah, BB Kings is a cool venue. There were a lot of older people there, and couples who seemed to enjoy his music. I was happy about that.
Waiting outside for autographs was just a funny experience, and I feel like this is the tip of the iceburg before the summer. I don't really understand how screaming "TIM will give us an autograph and he's a better Roger than you" would give anyone more reason to do meet and greets, but thats just me, lol.
Someone just said they were sitting behind Adam's parents last night, and that they might have gone out after the show. So it makes sense that he didnt want to stay too long after the show

re: West Side Story -- he doesn't like the show, for whatever reason, but I remember him saying at a gig once that he heard Billy Porter's arrangement of "Maria," and really loved it, which inspired him to go and do his own.
I wish he'd done a little bit more of his old solo music, but I've been saying that for a while. I miss it!

Posted: 5/10/07 at 12:16pmA couple waiters seemed genuine in saying that he left immediately after the show last night. They were done with work and said they had no reason to lie about his whereabouts considering they were off-the-clock. One of them said he went to Adam's dressing room almost immediately after the show and he was already gone. So, it's either some sort of conspiracy by even the seemingly genuine to keep Adam Pascal away from his fans or legitimately what happened (I'm going with the latter). I saw someone who at least looked like his mother (based on the picture in the Rent Bible, which I admittedly only vaguely remember) sitting not too far away from me and asking the people sitting with her at various times during the encore when they should leave, so it's certainly possible that they all went out immediately after the show. Otherwise, I won't get into my conflicted feelings about someone darting like that, because it's one of those situations where I can truly see and argue both sides. Unfortunate that my friend who flew here specifically to see him couldn't get a quick picture, though.

Oh, that's too bad about your friend. Is she going to Rent this summer?
Yeah, most of the waiters and stuff told me that he was gone too, and his road manager person came outside and was like "trust me, if I'm leaving, he's definetly gone." It's always a gamble at these kinds of shows. But I agree with you that in the case of last night, it probably wasnt a ploy to keep Adam away from his crazy fans, because there were like 12 people at most.

Yes, she is, but who knows if he'll do the same thing after Rent? She's obviously coming to see the show and not to get a picture with him, but I just think it would be a nice memento.
Well, I'd say that there were quite a few more than 12 people waiting for him, even after the crowd had thinned out a bit, but you're right that it was a manageable crowd. At any rate, I could go into reasons why I feel it's almost an obligation to sign after this sort of thing, but as I said, I can easily see the other side as well, and it's easier at this point to just say it was a good concert and be done with it.

Sounds like a lot of fun...and I love the idea of the disco ball! I have a weakness for those anyway.
I love Adam's version of Maria, btw. It's totally different, but the style is really suited to him.
Oh, and he didn't sign after the October 28th show in SF, either. He had a plane to catch to go home! I was disappointed, of course, but I'd already gotten his signature at Rent and Aida.
