$40??
Are you sure?
B&N.com lists it at $28, $25 for members.
Amazon has it for $26.20.
My local B&N also had it automatically discounted 30%, to $28, with members getting the additional discount.
The list price is $40, but B&N always discounts that it seems.
40.00 was there "better then most" rate.
The chick at Barnes & Noble told me that the website is completely different. Publishers give a discount to B&N online, but not the stores. At that point I had it in hand, wasn't handing it back. sigh...

I got mine at B&N and it was abot $30. I'm also a member, so I got another 10% off. I think it was worth every penny. It's a great book. VERY informative.
That's so strange JerseyGirl, because my Barnes and Noble had the 30% off sticker on the cover, and I got the extra 10% for being a member.
This book is a beautiful attempt at something great, but is not without it's shortcomings. As a published children's book author and illustrator, I can understand how producing a "making of" book is extremely hard to present on a thematic level. I do think that the illustrations are beautiful, and the layout is just as nice (gotta love those full page bleeds!), but it seems that there was too much attention paid to the overall kitschy-aesthetic-gimmick quality and not enough on the core content. Maybe I'm just a tight-arse, but I found that to be slightly condescending. The libretto doesn't (really) give away any of the plot points that we all know occur (Boq as the Tin Man, the fact that the Wicked Witch really didn't die, Fiyero as the Scarecrow), but instead leaves those critical points out (or rather, alluded to). But why? For fear they'll spoil the experience for first-time WICKED go'ers? I'm perplexed because I would think the people who are shelling out forty bucks for this book are WICKED/theatre clan. Which brings me to the glossary. Under the term "WIZOMANIA", I found the definition funny in it's mockery of the die-hard WICKEDophiles. A slightly bold reference to the very people/fans that made WICKED what it is today. I could have done without the Fiyero "Oz Beat" spread, and the "are you a Glinda or an Elphaba" quiz. A definite nod to their core demographic! In my opinion, the pictures of the props and costumes weren't elaborated on enough, but the text/articles/excerpts are wonderful. Wouldn't it be nice to see pictures of the guards costumes and the beautiful Emerald City gowns? We get an (amazing) two-page spread on Nessa's two wheel chairs, but we don't get any close-ups of her silver slippers? I felt that, from a pictorial standpoint, it was vastly incomplete. On the flip side, what they do give us is beautiful. The full-page VANITY FAIR photos are gorgeous and personally worth the money I spent on the book alone. 3 out of 5 stars on my end...

The book is gorgeous I think. But I am bummed that there is nothing about the Chicago cast included. I'm sure it was because of timing, publishing yada yada. However, it would been awesome to see some of our Ana, Kate, Rondi & Chris.
What books have you done JHartnow?
James2-
My first book was called "Sarah Lynn's Christmas Present". It's available on amazon.com. Anthony Rapp did part of the forward (if anyone cares...LOL). I'm on the second book now, hopefully due out by Fall 2006. Being involved with RENT through Broadway Cares takes up a lot of my time (I do the Broadway Bears from RENT), but I was able to be on stage with the South Carolina premiere of Disney's Beauty and the Beast recently. That was a great experience.

I stopped by B&N again after work yesterday and it was in this time. I decided to treat myself to it since I'm having surgery this Monday and will be bored to death doing nothing for a few days while recovering... it should be shipped to me this Saturday or Monday! YAY for ordering at the store discounts :)
Someone posted elsewhere that Stephanie, Jenna, Derrick, and Kendra were going to be signing autographs at The Galleria in Dallas today from 11:30-12:30... if that's true, anyone make it?
So far I really like the book. I really wish that the biggest picture of Fiyero was Norbert :P Also wish it hadn't been $40 but not much they could do about that heh. It really is a beautiful book. Going to cherish it <3

I had the same reaction. Out of everything I noticed, that jumped out at me. They feature all the original cast members when spotlighting the character, and then use Joe Mc for Fiyero. Kind of symbolic I guess - he gets to be a centerfold again.
So regardless of whether or not it has all the dialogue, is this book a definite buy?
I'm such a fool... I had B&N ship it to my house forgetting that I'd be at my mom's this week so it's been sitting at my house unwrapped since yesterday morning. My roommate is going to leave it for a friend of mine to pick it up and she's going to bring it over, but not till about 9pm. All this time I could've been enjoying it. Oh well. Thank goodness for kind friends who are willing to trek to the valley and back to the city!
was there a signing with idina and norbert. someone has one on ebay with pics as proof but i dont know anything about it
Yeah showing Joey mac as Fiyero was very wierd. But truthfuly, Norbert never had a really good picture in Wicked so Joey's pic worked best. You see Norbert too close and you can really see he was a bit too old for the part. I did enjoy his notes on the interpretation of the role. I'm adding that to the offical NLB for sure. The book though is a great read and well worth the money.
PS If you really want Norbert or Idina to sign, ask them nicely at the stage doors of DRS and SWIS. No?

I just got it for my birthday, and I love it.
JHartnow,
You made my comments very easy to compose by writing them first! Thank you! I had the same reactions to the book as you. I am a bit disappointed, but the sheer beauty of the book does compensate somewhat for its shortcomings.
Worth having for your coffee-table-sized theatre book collection, but not at full price when there are so many ways to get it at a discount.
It's visually beautiful. I was very pleased with the fact that there are so many pictures of Stephanie, but I found it odd that when there were pictures of Elphie and Glinda on a page, they were often from different casts. It just seemed weird. My favorite picture has to be the one of Kendra holding Elphie's hat. I love it.

I got my Grimmerie last week. Luckily, I love Wicked, so this is an amazing book. My favorite part is when most of the cast members for each role talk about their take on the role. Anyway, great book and if you haven't gotten it, get it. Two thumbs up.
