I have stayed at the Broadway @ Times Square each of the last three years and will be staying there again in October. That alone says enough of what I think about it. Clean, reasonable,safe,and convenient. Go for it.

I've stayed at the Doubletree times square a number of times; all good experiences. Also in times square I've stayed at and liked the Crown Plaza and Marriott Marquis.

The Paramount is a great location in the theatre district but of all the many hotels I've stayed at in that area it has the smallest rooms I've ever encountered.
For less expensive accommodations, I'd also recommend The Row (formerly the Mayfair Hotel). Plus if you're on the right side of the hotel you might be able to hear THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in performance since it next to the Majestic.

my rooms at the Paramount have always been pretty big. It probably helps that when I check in I'm always very friendly to the front desk staff and also say that if necessary I'll wait longer to have a better / street view room. Twice they've hooked me up with a corner room as a result.

The Doubletree Times Square West just opened earlier this year and is nice, safe and clean. The crowded lobby and too few elevators situation is not a lot of fun (you have probably read comments in the reviews). For only a night, that situation likely won't be too much of an issue though. Unless heavily discounted on longer stays, I won't consider staying there again.

NYC is expensive around that time as I believe the UN is in session. Try Hotwire and go for at least a 3.5 star ir higher. I've been using that site for most of my hotel bookings when I travel.

I've never stayed at either of those hotels, but I did stay at the Paramount as part of my first vacation in NYC in 2012. I think I got it through Priceline's Name Your Own Price feature where you enter the parameters of what you are looking for (star level, location, etc...) and the price you are bidding. It offers you options to change your bid if it's not accepted. I also have done the Priceline Express Deals before. You see the area of NYC and the number of stars as well as some features and the cost, but you don't know the hotel until you pay. Both options worked out well for me when I was traveling on a budget. Just know it's hard to cancel these reservations once made. But if you're okay with the above, it might be an option.
In regard to the Paramount, it was 2012 and think it may have undergone a renovation since. The rooms are tiny, but it's super close to Times Square and the Theater District. As I recall it was also clean and safe.
