She looks great, but the amount of photoshopping for the FOLLIES photos has been enormous..
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
She was gorgeous, but she's even more stunning in the "Losing My Mind" blue/purplish dress which I noticed they didn't include in the photos. Guess as CTG said to me on FB they'll still deciding on the final dress color which they'll have to make a final decision by tomorrow night.
I am conflicted because I don't know if Sally is really supposed to be all that gorgeous. She should be pretty, but I think that there should probably be something a little off about her. But she should be gorgeous in "Losing My Mind".
I guess I need to see a couple of more promo photos of her.
And I hope they are still reconsidering the green.
It looks line CTG posted up some more pictures of "Follies". I'm still not sold on the green dress, but Losing My Mind dress does look promising. I do wish that there was more difference in her hair style between the two looks though.
Her "Losing my Mind" pose is EXACTLY like Encores!
(well, almost :P)

I can understand the creative team changing Clark's party look, but if her "Losing My Mind" dress is so similar to the one Peters wore on Broadway, I wonder why they changed the design...
I'm with you Phyllis--while I actually enjoy all three of those Loveland songs for Phyllis (your namesake I mean :P ), Uptown/Downtown is my favorite. It's been a while since I read Everything Was Possible, but didn't Sondheim say that Bennett requested the change essentially just because he was frustrated at the time and they did the new song to appease him even though Sondheim felt Uptown/Downtown was better staged as it had the lyrical hook with the dancers facing up stage and down stage?
At any rate--one problem with Lucy and Jesse, and even on the Sondheim forum many people mentioned initially having this problem, is many people initially seem to think she's singing about two seperate people--ie herself and Sally, when really it is meant to be about two sides of her own personality, something Uptown (and actually Ah But Underneath) made more clear.
Now if only they would re-instate Bolero D'Amour...
inlovewithjerryherman: Peters dress was actually purple as well in the Broadway production; there was a video up some time ago interviewing Gregg Barnes. He took the viewer through his shop, and stopped at the "Losing My Mind" dress, noting that the color is in fact purple, it just looked super dark onstage. I'll try and dig for the video!
I'm not really a fan of that overpowering red rose background for Losing My Mind (though I haven't seen it live), but I think it's a case where a deep purple actually would stand out against it better in the theatre, than full on black would.

I myself have always been a little bit Sally and a little bit Phyllis.
I think the first green dress is lovely and feels very Sally, but, oy that Losing My Mind Dress? WTF? Were those the last scraps of fabric available in the shop? It looks like three different dresses pinned together. It's ill fitting and unflattering too. Abort. Abort. For the amount of gum flapping that's been going on in this thread about dresses, I'm surprised no one else thinks it's a frumpy disaster.
On to more important matters. How is Clark's "Losing My Mind"? Tell me she doesn't sing it like she did at Encores? You know, like some bizarre, stony eyed, Zoloft accented come-on. While her voice sounded magnificent, that was an odd ball rendition.
Saw the show this evening, someone hand Jan Maxwell the Tony right now. Victoria was amazing and the dress worked very well. So glad I am back in LA next week to see it again. Loved it loved it loved it!
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

The key for "Losing My Mind" has been raised since Encores! The interpretation also sounds more distressed along the lines of Bernadette's performance than sulty to me. Sounds great. Miss her very low notes at Encores! though, not sure if they were right for the character though :P...and I do wonder if she can still hit them (the low notes here don't sound as strong as they did at Encores! and they are higher....although I don't know much about singing, perhaps it is part of her technique, her 'register' or whatever and doesn't mean anything).

qolbinau - thanks so much for posting the link. I don't know what to make of this vocal performance. While I thought her performance of the song at Encores was bizarre (to say the least), her deeper vocal there was gorgeous. But with this shift up it feels all wrong. So stiff, so formal. She gets operatic on those high notes (I know that she can't necessarily change the character or strength of her voice), but it feels far too formal to me. It's like listening to an opera singer sing Sondheim for the first time -- not that all opera singers are incapable of "crossing over" beautifully (see Dawn Upshaw). It's all so prim and proper here. It's like Mrs. Anna or Queen Guenevere is trying to sing a torch song. I say, take it down again. I know, I know... one performance, out of context, from a preview, give her time...
I think she sounds fantastic, even in that little bootleg recording.
EDIT: And HorseTears, you don't seem to know about the history of torch songs in musical theatre, based on your comments. Have you ever heard Vivienne Segal, Helen Morgan, or Gertrude Lawrence? Listen to the early recordings of "Someone to Watch Over Me," etc.
Losing My Mind is a pastiche song, sung completely appropriately here, as far as style goes.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that recording is from this production. The orchestrations sound different, the key is higher, and she doesn't do the high note at the end.
