Posted: 1/11/07 at 3:04pmHas anyone seen Chicago with Bebe Neuwirth back in the show. Haven't seen any reviews. How is she about signing autographs at the stage door before or after the show.

I did not stay to stage door her, but I did see the show.
She was fantastic - the whole show was great. It's not my favorite production but I truly enjoyed my evening.
Also - Brenda Braxton as Velma was the perfect complement.
Both wonderful performers! Go see it!

Posted: 1/11/07 at 8:18pmI'm going on Saturday. I'm glad to hear she's doing well as Roxie.

Posted: 1/12/07 at 11:57amBebe as Roxie, I really enjoyed her overall. She doesn't really play the role for laughs (i.e. Bianca, some cases Charlotte), but she still has a very goofy aspect to her acting whilst maintaining Roxie's dark need for survival. Her Roxie is real and human. At times I think she is trying a bit too hard to create a character that is so vastly different from the roles she usually plays, but overall she's winning. Vocals are just right, and her dancing is controlled and impeccable. No leaps in MAMB, but so many added moves to the monologe. She wears her "raven hair" in curls, with a new act one costume, and ribbon around her neck. She honestly gave 110% and looked to be having a ball.

Has this ever happend before where a star of the original cast has returned later in the run in a different role?

Didn't some of the Phantom people do both Rauol and Phantom.
Also I believe that some of the LES MIS cast got to do both Jean Valjean and Javert's part....
I still have to say that my favorite Velma of all time was Caroline O'Connor! I just thought she did it so well! She was this little spitfire who just kicked some major ass in the part. I loved it.

Posted: 1/12/07 at 12:59pmOh my gosh she was incredible! My favorite part of the entire evening was her monologue before ROXIE...a.ma.zing.

I saw Bebe's performance last Saturday at the matinee performance. She was AMAZING. I didn't stay around at the stage door because I had to get my train back home, so I can't say anything about how she is at the stage door.
Singtopher- I don't know if this counts, but Chita Rivera (1975 original Velma) came back to the show in Las Vegas and a couple other places (on tour maybe, too?) and performed the part of Roxie around the year 2000. I saw a picture somewhere earlier today, I'll put it up here if I can find it again.

There are certain actors and actresses who've played more than one role in Chicago throughout their history with the show.
Bebe is one of 3 actresses to play both Roxie and Velma. (the other two being Chita and Donna Marie Asbury)
Also, by the time Roxane Carrasco had left the company, she'd played every female role except Roxie.

I saw her Wednesday night and thought she was spectacular. I had my reservations (having seen and loved her as Velma) but I have to agree with whoever posted that her monologue before "Roxie" was brilliant - I'd venture to say it was the best I've ever seen it done. I thought this casting was a bad idea but I'm VERY happy to take that statement back.
And a side note... I think she's adorable in that wig. In an evil sort of way.

Ah, interesting about the Velma/Roxies
I didn't even think about the guys who have played the lead male roles in Phantom and Les Mis.
Thanks!

Posted: 1/12/07 at 4:12pmI haven't seen her yet but in responce to the question of how she is with her fans. I met her at the flea market, it was when she was leaving the celeb table. She was very brisk and didn't really say anything but I think she was in a hurry

I have heard that she is not so nice to her fans but I can't give a first account for them so I'll give my experience. To my mom, my sister and myself along with a group of people around us, she was not nice AT ALL. She didn't even smile as my mom complimented her for her entire life's work.
And no one was dressed up as her or anything to put a halt on whatever I had set myself up for by posting here.
It was just an impression that I wish she never left on me because it's really hard to enjoy her performances with that in the back of my mind.

CJR you left out Ruthie Henshall.
re: Anyone seen Chicago with Bebe#19
Posted: 1/12/07 at 8:16pmMs. Neuwirth can come across as cold and brisk, but she really isn't as *mean* (for lack of a better word) as she seems. I remember I was 10 when I saw her in Fosse and my mom and I were the only ones waiting for her after the show. She wasn't all smiley and "Oh yay fans!" with us but she signed our playbills and and thanked us for the compliments we showered her with. Then she rushed off...I'm sure many people have had uncomfortable experiences with her but she's gracious and simply busy I'm sure. thats just my two cents :)

I saw her last weekend and thought that she was very good.
After the show when she came out she said right away that she wasn't going to do any pictures but would sign whatever we wanted. She was very nice to my friend and I and was joking a bit about being too old to be doing this.
Then I had to leave, but I wish that I could've stuck around because, I sh*t you not, some woman behind me had a Cheers DVD.

The monologue leading into ROXIE was one of the most brilliant five minutes in a theater I've ever experienced.
The woman was born to perform.
