Just wondering if anyone had seen any understudies go on in AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY. I saw this past Wednesday's matinee and Deanna Dunagan (Violet Weston - the mother) was out. Her understudy did a fine job (can't imagine taking over that role) but I just wondered how the show would be different if Dunagan was there. Such a huge and commanding role - had to give her understudy credit for doing a nice job, but somehow I got the feeling that the show had a different feeling when Dunagan is there. Still was a fantastic piece of theatre.
Thoughts?

I think I'm the only one who feels that Dunagan, while very good, wasn't nearly as fantastic as Amy Morton.
Dunagan is the only cast member who has been out.
do you know how many times she has been out?
Amy Morton was amazing - as was everyone, really - so wonderful to see such remarkable ensemble work.
Just last Wednesday
I thought Dunnagan was outstanding-I'm going back to see August: Osage County at least once more, perhaps twice. LOVED it. But Dunnagan was, in my opinion, the standout performance (Amy Morton was second). I thought her performance was heartbreaking and it sent chills down my spine.
Walt not true. I saw August on 12/30 and Munson Hicks was on in the role of Beverly Weston...Dennis Letts was out for the evening. He did a fine job for what the role is...did not leave much of an impression on me. But he was still good.
I think Dunnagan and Morton are both amazing actresses in very different ways.
I feel like their 2 show days are so menatally exhausting.
One of my teachers was Amy Morton's understudy in the Chicago production and she was replaced when they moved to Broadway. Sucks for her...
Yankee, I feel the same way. Amy Morton gives a far superior, more in depth performance than Dunagan.
Yankee, I also agree with you on this.
The entire cast is brilliant. Morton's Act Two closer though, is so insanely brilliant. Everyone I went with still quote this line... So powerful.
"I'M RUNNING THINGS NOW!"
I hope the producers have petitioned to split these two women into different Tony categories.
What did you want me to say? Mom's beaver?
I walked by the theater this evening and noticed that Amy Morton was out. Does anyone know if this was a scheduled absence or if she is sick? I was thinking about seeing the show this weekend for the first time, and I would choose a different time if she is not going to be there.
