The old expression is "No news is good news." So don't worry, be happy!

Worried is a strong word.
I'm worried about making a mark on the world artistically before the three ugliest men in the world (Orange, Lil Kim, and Pooting) blow us up.
I'm passively curious about JLP, though!

Worried? Nope. It's not ready for broadway. The book needs major re-writes. I'd be more worried if they were pushing it for this season. And while it's still possible, I wouldn't hold my breath for it.

Lol that doesn’t apply here though does it? It’s not as if they do press releases to announce a transfer is not happening. Only if it does.

Worried? I am TERRIFIED! Have you ever tried to swallow a jagged little pill? It'll tear up your throat.

And with news of Waitress going to the West End, I'm assuming that takes care of JLP coming in this season. I guess this was the reason Paulus isn't directing much at the ART this season.
2019 is looking pretty interesting!

Sure it does. If the producers think it is ready to come to Broadway, they will announce it. If they think it need more development, they can spend more time and do that. And if they think it is an unfixable mess, and they want to save their $$$ and not bring it to Broadway, then audience were spared a bad show. Every path is potentially good news.

Posted: 8/22/18 at 1:13pmThe show needs SO much work before it comes to Broadway. It would be wise of them to take as much time as they need to completely overhaul the book before even thinking of a transfer.

Resoundingly agree as to how much work it needs, though we might be in the minority given the overwhelmingly positive reaction the show received. Also, though Diane Paulus has no heavy lifting at A.R.T. in the Fall (only a musical revue incorporating songs from musicals she has presented during her ten year tenure which opens November 16), she is co-directing HAIR for TV which airs May 19th, so allowing for pre-production/rehearsal weeks necessary for that show, wouldn't JLP have to start previewing in November/December and open in January or February to free her up for those duties? Unless they only tweaked the show in the last few months and it is believed ready to go, IMHO, that time constraint seems another barrier to it realistically arriving for the 2018-2019 season.

SpongeBob opened on Broadway almost 1.5 years after its Chicago run.
And they didn't really even do anything to it, so it flopped anyway.

yes, of course, forgot to connect that important dot and sorry I missed your original post noting same. 2019-2020 it must be then- should give them the time to turn it into something coherent.

Posted: 8/22/18 at 6:26pmOnly thing I’d be worried about is if this show occupies a Broadway theater in its current state. Needs an insane amount of work before it can even think about New York.

Just off the top of my head, a few things going that I feel really need to be done to the show would be -
Basically the entire ensemble needs to go. They serve no purpose besides a very few scenes (school, the protest, the party) and them all just showing up to randomly dance and I see themselves into scenes has a very “high school musical, we’ll find a part for everyone” thing to it.
I’d consider cutting the part of the brother. Why does he even exist in this show? His entire purpose is to make the sister feel like she’s not as good as him and for him to say he knows what really happened at the end. He’s a useless character, otherwise really.
Pick an “issue” or two and run with them. Like many people have said, every single social issue doesn’t need to be represented here. And if they want to stick with Mary Jane and the drugs, that needs to be really addressed more. Besides that one incredible “backwards” scene she has and “Uninvited” there’s not much else to her addiction.
The husband singing “Mary Jane” at the hospital needs to be reworked because him standing next to his wife who almost died, saying “What’s the matter Mary Jane, had a hard day?” sounds so condescending and dickish.

Saw it in Boston and dug it deeply. I am worried it will delight you, and grab you from the first crunchy chord. Notwithstanding the lead who I find screeeeetchy musical theater annoying as the mom, I loved it actually. a "B+" from my bone to yours. Pretty solid for an out of town toss and fluff.

I agree with some of this. Particularly the stuff about the brother. Which for me, would mean just dropping the whole rape storyline. It really took away from the stuff about the mother and daughter, which really should be the main focus, in my opinion. It kind of just added clutter and made us focus on a smaller character who has no influence on anything else going on.
It was good, but it definitely could be so much better.

I think many of us agree that the POTENTIAL is there for this to be great - it just needs to be re-thought. Too many issues to be able to fully examine any of them. They need to decide which story they want to tell, because right now, they have 5 too many.

I don’t think they’d have to drop the rape storyline at all without the brother there. However, I think they SHOULD drop that storyline because like you said, it just seems like clutter.
