I'm auditioning for Erma in Anything Goes and needed some audition song suggestions. I was thinking maybe Gimme Gimme from Thoroughly Modern Millie?  ????

That song is so over performed at auditions. Since she sings Buddie Beware in that version of anything goes. I more sultry ballad would be appropriate even Paris Makes Me Horny from Victor/Victoria

I should probably also mention that the show is with a youth theatre company, so anything that is...well, you get the point. Anything Goes obviously is a tad riskay for a youth theatre company, but it's a highschool summer camp.

Would Picture Show from Bonnie and Clyde or Right Hand Man from Something Rotten be bad choices? I think Right Hand Man brings out a lot of the deep tones in my voice, like Buddie Beware(I'm an alto), but I'm on the fence about singing a song from a new musical. Picture Show however, sounds pretty good with my voice, and in the song, Bonnie wants the finer things like Erma. The only problem is I think it might be a little young. Like I said, its a highschool camp.

Since the composer is dead*, I think I'd sing Cole Porter, but NOT something from ANYTHING GOES. Some possibilities:

Let's Be Buddies

C'est Magnifique

I Love Paris

Miss Otis Regrets

My Heart Belongs to Daddy

Begin the Beguine

Easy to Love

There are countless others, of course. I don't own the dictionary in which "Paris Makes Me Horny" is defined as "sultry", at least not seriously so. Some of the songs I've listed weren't sultry when first performed, but they could be done that way now. In any event, I don't think you have to be sultry in your audition; just stay away from patter songs.

 

* The old "rule" was "Never sing a song by a composer or lyricist who will attend the audition (unless you are specifically asked to do so)." Writers tend to have very firm ideas how they want their material performed and it's a crap shoot as to whether you will guess right.
