re: Applegate's 'Charity' CD--ugh!

I liked her on stage...She did win me over...Although her vocal work was no Gwen Verdon and I really enjoyed Debbie Allen's vocals as well...Michael Rupert will always be my favorite Oscar though. I thought Denis O'Hare was great, but I just melt when I hear Michael Rupert's version of "Sweet Charity"...Plus no one can beat Bebe Neuwirth...Unless it's Chita Rivera!!!!

It's an awful album. Bad orchestrations, bad performances. Unlistenable. How people here can praise it and trash the Gwen Verdon original is beyond my imagination.

Who trashes the Gwen album??

I LOVE how people complain about this revival's orchestrations, the only major change in RHYTHM OF LIFE. Get over it.

The first revival changed SO MANY orchestrations, and I don't hear people complaining about that one.

The 2005 revival is a lot more faithful to the original orchestrations than the 86 revival was.

The revival orchestrations destroy just about everything. They borrow some bits and pieces from the Ralph Burns originals, enough to sound vaguely reminscent, but change just enough to ruin them, like that awful call and response version of "If My Friends Could See Me Now" in the Overture. The '86 revival album is also a disaster, but the production was much more faithful in the theatre. (Coleman, like Stephen Schwartz, loved to wreck show orchestrations in the recording studio, and the '86 recording is a prime example).

I was actually pleasantly surprised with her on the CD, but only because I'd heard such awful things about her performance. I got the CD and thought "Oh, she's not half bad." And then I saw the show and thought "Wow!" She really is a lot better in person. Plus I love the rest of the album, I love Janine and Denis.

Well for the first revival they used the "techno/dance" I'M THE BRAVEST INDIVIDUAL in the Theatre - and used the crappy movie arrangment of the title song.

In the new revival - THERE'S GOTTA BE SOMETHING BETTER THAN THIS is practically perfection. The orchestrations seem exact to the original, and the orchestra sounds incredible on this number.

OH Bobby, I didn't see that comment. How many times must we explain that Gwen's voice was suffering majorly during Charity, these people can't comprehend it.

The original 86 revival used the movie arrangement.

The new revival used the original arrangement but cut out the ensemble's original lyrics/harmonies at the end of the song (and that was dissapointing to me.)

It's still my favorite version...Loved it live...Michael Rupert was amazing...There was a reason he won the Tony!

I much preferred the arrangement of the title song that's on the '86 cd to the new one. The movie version actually seemed slower to me than the one used for the '86 revival, but then it's been awhile since I've watched the movie. (Well, it's been awhile since I've watched that sequence! I regularly put it on and watch Big Spender and Something Better Than This.)

When I initially heard the first revival recording, I thought it definitely had a cheesy, 80s sound to it...but it sort of grew on me. I'll be interested to hear the remastered version when it's released.

The track is posted on Michael Rupert's MySpace page, but it didn't say if it was remastered or not.

and used the crappy movie arrangment of the title song.

I never heard the '86 revival arrangement, but I loved the movie version of the song "Sweet Chairty." I found that the original version to be too slow and boring.

Yeah, the funky "I'm the Bravest Individual" fairly sucks. I agree. I do prefer the movie title song to the dreary original version.

Not certain of the exact numbers, but I think the current revival cuts about 6-7 players out of what was the original Ralph Burns instrumentation: the strings are diminished, of course (that goes without saying these days), but also several brass players and a reed part are gone.

You're not alone ljay. I prefer the original title song as well. I also love that music set to different lyrics in "You Wanna Bet". Barbra does a mean version of it.

re: Applegate's 'Charity' CD--ugh!

totally off topic here - but I just looked at those photos of Applegate at Splash - and had no idea Eric Sciotto was in Charity - his star is really rising - he works constantly and he's a really sweet guy - I'm glad to see he's still on the way up. We used to live in the same building, and he was a great neighbor.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

rehot...on "Martha" yesterday, Applegate pointed out Eric in the audience as being there for her.

BTW...Can I just say that Martha Stewart never shuts up when interviewing her guests??? She was asking Applegate a question and Applegate would say.."Yes, I love to..." and Martha would cut right back in and start babbling on about the damn cupcake she was fashioning out of useless yards of candy crap.

I would have liked to have heard what Applegate had to say.
