I know getting there early is better for chances of getting tickets at all, but does being first guarantee the best rush seats available? Does it depend on the show?

Guess it depends on the show.
My rush experience this past week:
(Sat Evening) Color Purple arrived 7 AM, Row D Orchestra Seat 11, Great seat even though marked partial view
(Sun Evening) American Psycho arrived 10am (box office opened 11am) Row A Orchestra 102 (amazing seat!)
(Sun Matinee) School of Rock arrived 12:15pm (1pm start) Row D 19 (although the 4 seats next to be were empty so I scooched along just before the show started)
(Tues Evening) She Loves me arrived approx 6pm Rear Mezz NN Seat 113
(Wed Matinee) Fiddler on the Roof arrived 1pm, Orchestra row L seat 24 (full view)

It depends on the show. Typically what they do is give out the "best" tickets first I think, but without evaluating what's actually best. I.e. they might start with the front in a theater with a pretty high stage, and seats a few rows back or in the mezz might actually better (also depending on your preference of seats).
Also, I have a feeling some shows might release some more rush seats close to showtime when they know they won't sell them at face value anymore, and these might be better than what they sold in the morning. But I have no proof this, and would be very risky to speculate on, esp- if you only have a limited number of chanced to try and get tickets.

I also rushed Dear Evan Hansen and got one of the standbys, arrived 11am for the 2pm Saturday matinee and ended up standing (but so worth it!)

Rush tickets are not necessarily better if you get them earlier. If they are offering an entire row, they will start at one end and go to the other. And not necessarily in order of best seats..often just in numerical order. As much as I like an aisle, the 5th person on mine might have a better seat than the first.

Hi Mark_E,
I have two questions. 1) How did the standby work for Dear Evan Hansen? I keep trying to rush and it says "standby," but I thought that meant to standby online, lol. If I read your post correctly you are supposed to show up to the theater instead?
2) When you arrived 45 mins early for School of Rock was there already a line ahead of you? Just trying to gauge how early I should get there.
