It would be pretty amazing to see movies that show adverts of the Hal Prince-Sondheim shows, or Chorus Line etc...
Do these exist? Or perhaps 'product placement' (if this is an example of it) wouldn't have been prominent then...

Posted: 6/21/11 at 11:16pmBut remember, those billboards you're used to seeing surrounding the Times Square of 2011 advertising Broadway shows were not too prevalent back in the 70's. Lots of the signage then was for Coca Cola, Castro Convertible (couches), Mr. Peanut, Camel Cigarettes, Canada Dry, Maxwell House Coffee, etc. You'd have had to look down 44th and 45th Street to see the actual theater marquees of those classic shows. The Palace Theater at 47th and Broadway, and the Winter Garden up at 50th were the lone exceptions then.

The Fan is a brilliant camp classic, one that's also filled with a wonderfully awful portrayals of a gay man. The Musical within the movie Bacall stars in, Never Say Never, is almost as brilliant as Meryl Streepo's Songbird in Death Becomes her (although that was meant to be camp...) or That Hell dance show in Staying Alive. I am not afraid to admit that I own the brilliant movie poster.
Cinemademerde has a good write up of the film, but obviously I'd read the review after watching it. http://cinemademerde.com/The_Fan.shtml

I had never heard of The Fan until Borstal shared a link awhile ago with one of the numbers that Lauren Bacall performs in the show (within the movie). The music is by Marvin Hamlisch and the whole thing is just pure cheddar.
I had to seek out a used copy of the dvd just to see it all for my own eyes.
Not as campy as The Apple (never seen that one either? Do not wait - it makes the Phantom of The Paradise look high art), but it's glossy, hammy, fun.
And there are some great Times Square shots.

I had no idea Hamlisch did the music for The Fan--though I can kinda her it now. And I love the Apple, though I think Phantom of Paradise is kinda high art

Some exterior and interior shots for The Fan were filmed at the Shubert.
There is also a Al Pacino film, (dont recall the name, but it was filmed in 196
where he is walking past the now gone Rivoli Theatre, Bway and 49th. You can see the marquee and showcase advers for the Julie Andrews film Star!. If all else fails, watch the opening scenes of the TV show That Girl, they have a quick montage of Broadway marquees.
