Is there ever a good revue.

The only good ones I have ever seen was Fosse. And Mamma Mia is kind of pushing it.

But all the revue's I have seen have made me regret seeing it.

25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is getting raves.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

I've enjoyed SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD and SMOKEY JOE'S... and suprisingly, a group locally did the MTI revue called BLAME IT ON THE MOVIES, and it was quite entertaining.

And if she'll say, "My darling, I'm yours!" I'll throw away my striped tie and my best pressed tweed, all I really need is the girl...

AIN'T MISBEHAVIN is a classic of the genre (and won the Tony for Best Musical). There's also SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM, SOPHISTICATED LADIES, DANCIN', and JACQUES BREL

Ok I really didn't think of that Songs for a New World is good, but have you guys seen Working? Beehive? Leader of the Pack? A my name is alice? all shook up?

They are just BAD

I mean it is very very difficult to have a good revue.

REVUE = A plotless musical theatre piece

REVIEW = A critical assessment

Oh Revue...

Here are some really good ones:

Closer Than Ever
Listen to My Heart
Starting Here, Starting Now
And the World Goes 'Round

Maybe you don't prefer revues...

However, I thought Movin Out was a very good revue.

Oh yeah. Last year I saw an excellent regional theatre REVUE of 'And the World Goes Rounds' featuring songs by Kander and Ebb. If memory serves, the original revue was off-bway. See music.msn.com/album/?palbum=10618425&album=10092148 for the track listing of the OCR.

Movin' Out isn't a revue...
It's a Ballet.

Smokey Joe's Cafe is the longest running Broadway revue.

Jerome Robbins' Broadway (really more a greatest hits collection of scenes than a traditional revue)
Bubbling Brown Sugar
Sugar Babies
Tintypes
Leader of the Pack
Black and Blue
Five Guys Named Moe
It Ain't Nothin' But The Blues
Swing!

Movin Out is an evening of modern dance, not a revue. By definition a revue has no plot and Movin Out tells a story (with a beginning, middle and end) through dance with defined characters and conflicts.

Aint' Nothin' But the Blues was a favorite of mine.

Stunning singers (particularly the spectacular Grethe (sp??) Boston) and a fascinating history.

Ooh, I hated Swing!, then again it was an 8th grade field trip, we sat all the way up, and I thought I was seeing a show, not a revue. Only Broadway event I ever fell asleep during..

Well no mentioned it, I think it counts as a revue...my favorite one is Forbidden Broadway! I mean that's plotless but to any true broadway fan it's really, really worth seeing and certianly the most entertaining revue I've ever seen.

And I'm also considering seeing The musical of musicals: the musical. Would that count as a semi-revue?

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
